Hey arsenel if your friend has XP installed than do not worry coz password can be easily changed. All you have to do is that when the laptop is just about to boot press F8 then select SAFE mode and start your laptop in safemode. Then after starting go to control panel= User Accounts and just simply change the Password.Computer can be started easily in safemode even if it is password protected.

Well, going into safe mode is OK IF there is no administrator password set. If there is, and you don't know it, you are nearly screwed. Unless you have an Ultimate Boot Disk or a Linux Boot Disk to load another OS on the machine, you may have to reinstall or "repair" Windows using the original disk that came with the machine.
The problem is that most newer machines don't actually come with a true Windows install disk. They come with a Restore disk that has the operating system and all kinds of other crap on it. Many of these won't do a "repair" and can only wipe the entire drive and start over. I suggest doing this every so often anyway to clean up your machine - of course, back up your data first.
Of course, most people never set an administrator password on their machine, so Safe Mode will work for you.

if he forgot the password to access the bios configuraton page (normally accessed by pressing F2 or Del at startup), then he can remove the battery, it should resent the password.
if it is windows password, there isn't much he can do . However, this site tells how could Windows password be recovered:

give it a try, it might work

In Vista, as in Windows XP, there is an Admin account automatically created. There is no password set on it as default, so you could try logging in as Admin.
