Jolene

So last night on American Idol, Alexis got the boot after singing a so so rendition of Dolly Parton's song Jolene. I thought it had some promising moments and I thought it was better than several other singers, but what do I know. Anyway I was listening to the lyrics:
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, jolene
He talks about you in his sleep
Theres nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, jolene
And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you dont know what he means to me, jolene
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can
You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
Hes the only one for me, jolene
I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, jolene
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him even though you can
Jolene, jolene
And I was thinking "what's wrong with this picture?" I don't care how dang pretty Jolene is, you don't just "take" somebody's man. I mean seriously, folks, what's she going to do, duct tape him and haul him away? Of course not. Either he's going to go with her or he isn't. I think she's appealing to the wrong person here. Oh well, it's just a silly song...

true..
if your guy is plain loyal to you, no 'jolene' can 'take' him away from you..
but i think it is common reaction for anyone - to get rid off the 'temptation', 'possible risk factor'.. - no temptation - no one will be tempted.. ??
and i guess a song - begging for your man to not leave you - is just too common and too boring.. ??
* i thought alexis sang well last night, too.

Yep if your guy is loyal and your relationship is what it should be, he isn't going to be available to be stolen. But oh well, just a song.
And yeah, Alexis did well enough that she should have stayed. But then it isn't really a singing contest. It's a popularity contest and the winner is the one with the most avid fans.

Ok, I'd admit it, I'm a closet AI fan. There I said it! And I'm sooooooo glad it wasn't Scott that was eliminated. He's such a cool dude, and has a wonderful quality to his voice. The judges are right though, he needs to vary his song selection......that said, what did you think of Adam's rendition of "Ring of Fire". At first it was a bid weird, hearing in my head as I did, Johnny Cash's voice, but by the end I was standing up and cheering, it was so cool and such a great twist and so original. Adam singing country is not in the cards anyway, so I thought he was great! He's my fav..........can you tell? LOL
Anyway, to get back to your discussion..............Women steal other's men all the time. That's why there are so many divorce lawyers and country songs! ROFL

Actually Adam's rendition was based on Jimmy Buffet's rendition........
As for the man stealing........country folk don't dance to the same drummer (lol) and so it could have been the man, but more than likely it was just the woman deciding she had more going on than the SO of the man of her choice and decided to strut her stuff. You know men. They'll follow what the little brain says more often than the larger one! LOL

Adam's rendition kind of reminded me of the Beatle's India period. I thought it was interesting but I don't see myself buying the CD. But I really like him too.
But do those women steal those men or was there something wrong with the man and/or the relationship to begin with? That sort of where I was going with that...

Kind of my point, if you're with somebody who doesn't return your feelings the same way, he already isn't yours. It's not that the other woman is stealing him.
And yea, Alexis wasn't at the top of her game but she certainly wasn't the worst the other night either.

I was not impressed by Alexis. My favorite in this competition is Adam. Hard to say who is the best, because all voices are with good quality.
This competition is by eliminating and eventually we will have only one person left.
This year they have good singers and nice people in general.

Maybe Jolene is a massive woman able to carry the average-sized man in her arms without much effort. If so, then what can the other woman do but watch as Jolene steals her man. So tragic!

well i like the song. But as far as alexis i think she got a raw deal. How did they expect her to sing well last night/? She was under pressure and probably on the verge of tears. I will miss her. I have made a web site dedicated to american idol. Alexis was one of my favoites . I liked her much better than allison. Oh well
Here is my web site

Actually I like Allison a teensy bit better, but I do think Alexis is better than some of the people who stayed. I don't think it's quite fair to make them sing the same song again when they're deciding to save them either. I mean, if they didn't like the song the first time, what are the chances they will like it the second time around. Let them sing something else!
Nice site btw.

I had never really thought about this song like this. I love this song sang by Dolly Parton. I have heard others sing this same song but it is never as good as the original.
I think that there are women in this world who would try to steal a man away just because he was vunerable to her. It happens a lot and that is why there are so many marriages that end in divorce.
I thought on Tuesday that Alexis would be in the bottom three but I sure didn't expect Michael to be there. I thought that he done a great job and I thought that he should make it to the top 10.

Yeah there are a lot of women like that. I was just commenting on the foolishness of the men who run off with them!
Actually I didn't think Michael did that well. For somebody who is supposedly all about country music, I thought he was just so so. It was his week to really shine and he didn't.

Sometimes they are really not looking. There are women who make it their hobby to come on to men. Especially married ones. They throw themselves at them. Show up at your door. Call your hubby for a favor etc. Kind of hard for a man to ignore that kind of woman. A man would do the same if another man was trying to woo his wife.

I wouldn't want a man like that. What? I have to convince another woman to leave my man alone? No way. Can't he decide for himself? Huh!
Anyway, I respect Dolly Parton and Alexis Grace because they can sing like that. But as for the song? I do not enjoy hearing a woman begging, especially for a man.

Yeah exactly my point. If the guy is going to go off with another woman, is telling her to go away really going to stop him?

Well if "my man" was talking about her in his sleep and I was afraid that a woman could take "my man" then he is not "my man" anyway and Jolene could very well have him whether I love him or not because if it is not Jolene I was worried about then it would be someone else! Plus the fact I don't go begging anyone not to "take my man" and I certainly don't play 2nd fiddle to anyone either!

Responding to ur American Idol message. Have you ever noticed that so many songs are about a women that is begging a man not to leave her...... I say if he is foolish enough to run off with Jolene then she needs to let him go. I wrote a worship song the other day myself and I"m praying that God will send someone my way that can write some music for me....I normally try to keep up with American Idol but these days it seems that I have so many other things keeping me busy....Let me know if you happen to know of anyone who is good at writing music okay? Thanks for sharing about Jolene, true some songs are just plain stupid but still it was a song and Idk what it is about music but it always seems to get my attention.

Let him go. Truer words were never spoken but yet it's so easy to say and so hard to do for some people.
Nope I don't know anybody who is good at writing music though there are a few musicians in the family.
