This has been something I've wondered about all my life. I never shout in anger. When I feel negative (sad, angry, afraid, frustrated, tired, embarassed, guilty, bad, sorry) I try my best to control myself, because in the heat of those negative emotions, I don't want to do something I'll regret, but not being perfect I may, in which case, I want to be able to back up my actions with an explanation of why I did what I did at that time.
A lot of people shout because they are not in control of their emotions. I feel anger etc. like everyone else, but I don't want to take it out on other people, or use that anger to threaten others. I refuse to do that.
My husband used to shout in anger, and when he saw how much it scared me, and how calm I could be when angry, he decided to change his ways, and follow my example. We have a much happier marriage because we don't shout at eachother.
