Last week I bought my girlfriend a pepper spray. We see each other one time a week or even one time per two weeks and I'm not near most of the time. There was a case when someone abused her, trying to steal her wallet, and my baby-girl punched him. Lucky he was drunk. But had happened if the guy was a big one who wanted to violate her? I think it would have broke me apart...So, I want her to be in security so I did the maximum from what I could - a pepper spray.
What would you do to protect when she/he is not near?

Volkus-
I study martial arts under my husband, and one of the things we work on a great deal is joint manipulation, also called compliance techniques. These work well for women because they rely on leverage, and allow a woman of any stature to take down an opponent greater in size then herself, so she can get away safely. The idea is to get away safely, not beat anyone to a bloody pulp. I'd look for courses that teach those techniques.
In terms of using a weapon, well most weapons end up being used against the victim, so I'd avoid them. However, anything can be a weapon and used if only to help the person get away. A hand bag can become a nice one to distract the assailant. Keys held between the fingers. A woman's heel can become a deadily weapon.
Just keep in mind that you must only use justifiable force to get away. Anything else makes you the assailant.

Good for you! Although I have to tell you - pepper spray isn't always going to protect your gf. Kickboxing or taking some kind of self-defense class would probably benefit her a lot, and would give her those "killer instincts" when it comes to defending herself. (I know, that sounds weird - but SO many girls carry pepper spray in their purses and on reflex, don't think to use their pepper spray to defend themselves from attackers).
All of my boyfriends were pretty confident in my ability to kick butt (three years of kickboxing !) but still were pretty protective on me when I went out with them. Weird.

I think maybe she is not alone there. You can turn to her friends for help. For they can help her when she is in trouble.Remember,do not turn to her male friends for help.
