what do you do when you can't sleep?

lack of sleep causes me stress. i don't know, there are just nights when i really am so tired and sleepy but i can't sleep. when i can't sleep, i just lie in bed and think of anything until i get ... blank. realizing that i was already asleep. Lol!

Normally I don't to bed unless I am dog tired. I keep on doing something or other before going sleep until I become real tired before going to bed to have a sound sleep. Inspite of all this things some times as you have said I too encounter such periods when I don't get sleep and keep mind working for me in the form of thinking where I wander from one place to another and also from one topic to anoher , so amnd and so on! But I know one techneque which really works for me and that is to relax your body and mind and stsrt backward counting from hundred to one! So far I could never reach to one, and before reaching one I go to sleep! You can a have a try and let me know if it worked or works for you! When I can't fall asleep,I lie in bed and think everything I can remember.I look at the dark space ,always look it.I don't know when I will fall asleep but I really fall asleep after that.

When I can't sleep, I usually go onto my computer, read, write, or something like that. This usually helps me fall asleep. I try to do something that I like doing, when stress is preventing me from sleeping.

When I can't sleep, I'll be up and turn on the TV, see if I could catch a good ol' movie in some cable channel and if I get bored doing that, I go online, do some mylotting or listen to my iPod. Normally, after some time, I'll get sleepy but when I still can't sleep, I read some of my favorite books or even old newspapers.

Most times I sleep when I am tired. If I didn't fall in sleep I spend time in the net like I am doing in myLot or other sites. I like listening to songs. When I am lying in the bed, if I don't fall asleep I listen to the songs through radio FM stations. Sometimes I keep on thinking about somethings until I fall asleep.

My understanding is that if you are truly not ready for sleep, (restless, can't relax and get comfortable), then it's best to get up and stop fighting it. In a case like this, I get up and read or watch TV. Counting never worked for me. Here's my best never-fail method for catching the "dreamland express". I get in my usual, most comfy sleep position, close my eyes, relax my body, then I pick a random catagory- (dog breeds for example)- then go through the alphabet--- airdale, boxer, collie, dalmation, etc. I have never yet gotten through the entire alphabet or even close. I just vary the catagory each time I am ready to sleep. I've used car makes and models, flowers, foods, things you might find in a school, on a farm, etc. Works for me, might work for you too. When i cant sleep, i come downstairs & either watch tv or get on the internet. I also study when i cant sleep or read. That always makes me tired quickly so then i am ready to try again for the bed.
