I caved!

Most of my friends know that when we moved, we had to downgrade to a dial up internet plan because we were under the impression that was the only option here. Shortly after the move we learned that Road Runner is available here, but due to the cost, we elected to stay with dial up... That is until yesterday! I've been getting fed up with the fact that nothing is loading properly for me. I can't get on to some of my money making websites, which means I'm losing money by having dial up. Not to mention that I can't be online during particular hours because I need to keep the phone lines free. So I'm losing lots of money! So I caved and called to order Road Runner, a cable internet connection. It will be installed next Thursday! Woohoo! Have you ever had to downgrade something in order to save money? Has a downgrade ever proved to be counter productive? How long do you think you'd last on dial up internet?

I think that is why it's not so easy to save money. You are not upgrading just because you can't wait for the speed or that you can't adjust your schedule. This is a matter of making money not losing it. Sometimes washing the clothes in a washer beats going down to the stream to save electricity, water, etc. It's just more efficient. Sounds like you are getting settled and doing well. I hope your cable hookup works well.

That's what my hubby keeps saying. With cable, I'll be able to make as much money as I used to before the downgrade, so that will basically pay for the internet. I can't make that much now with dial up, so I am losing money.

I could never go back to dial up service. It is so slow. It would drive me crazy. My DSL seems slow at times. I would have to tweak the computer or super boost it. Do they have turbo boost power for computers? LOL

I had DSL before moving and thought it was just as good as cable, which I had before that. If you want to speed up your computer you can buy more RAM. My hubby has done that for both of our computers.

usually no, though I can't imagine going back to dialup. But with me it was even worse than that. I not only had dial up, my dial up was web tv. And when it seemed to be getting slower - unbarably. Not only that, web tv could not pull up anything site that used java. Most videos would not play. So I was on e-bay one day and saw a laptop that was listed for $252.00. I decided to bid $310.00 I won it by $5.00. So I got that, ordered DSL. I remember being amazed that I could be online and hearing the phone ring. But no, usually when I downgrade to save money, it has not been counter productive. Like buying a can of coffee that costs 5 or 6 dollars rather than 10 or 11.

I don't think I would last a week with dial up internet! I have become very attached to my high speed service. I can't think of a time when downgrading turned out to be counterproductive. I have had to drop services in order to save money, and it has turned out the opposite. Last summer we dropped cable TV. I thought that wouldn't last long, but it has been great! We tend to get TV series on DVD from the library or NetFlix, so now I don't have to watch commercials! :)

We've had to give up cable as well, and we're doing just fine with that. We didn't watch most of the cable channels anyways. It was mostly for the kids, they watched Disney channel constantly! But now they have PBS which they like, hubby and I still have our shows on NBC and ABC that we can watch without cable, and we have a Blockbuster account for movies. I think we'll attempt to continue to live without cable.

Personally, I've never downgraded anything to save money. With internet, I know I could never downgrade. I've had cable internet for at least 5 years or more and I couldn't ever go back! When my hubby and I go to buy a house, internet access will be a deciding point on whether or not I want to get it.. or I may even have to buy one of those broadband things from Verizon.

I had Verizon DSL before we moved, before that I'd had cable. I didn't notice any difference between the cable and DSL. The DSL was cheaper for us, and I really liked it. Unfortunatly I can't get that where I am now, so it's either Road Runner or dial up. But I got a promotion with road runner so for the first year will pay the same amount as I did with the DSL.

I have dial up at home until they change the telephone wires and it is a right royal pain. I prefer to reach work earlier and go on line her and at lunch time too rather than use dial up. You made the right decision as it is very necesary for you as you earn money on line. I am very happy for you. You will be in seventh heaven again! Blessings

I've lasted for the past 7 years on dial-up. I don't know what it's like to have a faster connection as it's the only kind of connection I've had. So I can't say for certain how long I'd last on dial-up if I had to downgrade to it from having a high speed connection. Though I wish I could get a high speed connection here so I could find out!

When we moved in here I assumed I had no other option, but then I found out that the cable company does come out here. Their website said they didn't, but I called them after hearing that a neighbor has Road Runner. So now I'm back on a high speed connection and couldn't be happier!

I should try doing that. Though I'd hate to be disappointed (again) if it wasn't available.

I have not had dial up internet in six years, I could never go back. It is just so inconvenient. I had the opportunity to get dial up where I am right now but I waited six months and was internet-less until I had to money to buy a laptop and get a wireless connection. I think I would have gone crazy with dial up. Good for you for moving back to a faster connection.

I would not last an hour on dialup internet.Getting cable internet is a very good option to surf and make money. In my native place at my uncles place we have wireless dialup connection.THe speed is so slow.It takes two to three minutes to load a page.I cannot complete my work fast over there and have to sit for more hours in front of the computer.

Hey kats! Well, I'm glad that you were able to get your internet problem sorted out so quickly! I may be having the same problem and I have no idea how I am going to end up! Right now I have my cable tv, phone and internet all connected together to save money, but it is still very expensive! I don't know how much longer I will be able to keep it all up so I will probably have to think of something else and I have no idea what I will do! I had dialup before and I can't imagine going back to it now! It was ok when I didn't know what the highspeed connection was, but now that I do I don't think I could ever go back! So I sure know what you mean!

My cable company offers the same deal, but we aren't going to take it. We're doing just fine without cable, and we have a normal land line phone through the phone company which is cheaper than the digital phone through the cable company. My internet will be on special for a year, after which it will go up to $45. We may have to look for other options at that time, because that isn't exactly affordable. We'll see though.

Hi, katsmeow... I don't think I can go back to using dial up. I kinda like the faster broadband. Right now, I'm renting a room in a condo here in the city and I have my own internet but since my landlord had to cut their own internet for cost cutting, they asked me if they can share to my own internet. I have my doubts but yeah I did. though they took my modem to get connected to their wireless router since I don't have a router and their laptop didn't have a NIC to get wireless signals. So I gave in to let them have the modem itself and now I'm connected wirelessly from their own room... Most of the time I am the one being inconvenient when I found that I can't connect and can't detect their signal which means I have to knock on their door to powercycle the router since they are using the internet all day till early hours in the morning I think. I don't want to get pissed off but soemtimes they disconnect the wan line on the router and connect the modem directly to their laptop so I couldn't get a signal since the router isn't connected. I am renting a room and I don't want to give an impression that I'm selfish or somewhat like that... so yeah, it's hard but I have to put up with them. They said they are just going to share the internet in one month... so I am praying for more patience lol... I didn't ask if they are going to share for the bill though so I think they're thinking it of sharing for free sigh... I'll just let this one pass since I don't mind sharing things from time to time... God help me hee hee... I love having a soft heart

Yeah I had dial up at first but then we went cable and I have never looked back. It basically pays for itself and there is obviously no comparing the speed.

I couldn't imagine going back to dial up. My parents had it for a long time and whenever I visited them it would drive me crazy. I am glad you'll be back on high speed soon.

I haven't had dial up in a really long time. My cable right now is really expensive, but I have a contract, it doesn't expire until next year. My husband and I downgraded telephone service once because the price was cheaper, but it was a terrible decision. You get what you pay for, the reception was very bad. We now have cable, internet and phone through one company, it costs about $150.00 per month.

We had dial up from 1991 until the spring of 2004. We had no other choice here. There was no cable and we couldn't afford satellite. We didn't get DirecTV until 2007, so that was out of the question. Our phone company finally let the people in our area hook up to DSL, although the hub is farther away than it should be for good connections. So we get next to the slowest hook up, but man, it's much faster than dial-up. We have had the SLOWEST dialup - to almost the highest. Hardly anyone could ever get 56K, we were getting 48 to 49K's when we got off dialup. I wish they'd build a hub closer to us so we could get the DSL service my son is getting from the same phone company! His is lightning fast!

I used dialup for years until I found I was using the internet too much and needed the time I was waiting for downloads. I would like to have a faster cable connection as I have one of the cheaper options and the speed is still limited. I still have a cheap dialup backup and use it once in awhile when I am having cable problems. It is not that bad for some things, but when you get to downloading large files or run into heavy flash sites it can take forever to download. If you are on dialup and have the right modem you can get the phone to ring through your computer and take the call. I do not know how it works, I think you might have to subscribe to call waiting or something and it beeps you like when you are on the phone and someone calls. It has something to do with V92. However you are getting cable internet so you do not need that.

We have had DSL for less than a year. And who knows we might have to go back to it shortly, which will be unbearable. So we are enjoying it while we can. If the economy gets any worse, we definitely will be going back to dial up. And we will have to give up being to use the phone while on the computer. Which has come in handy. Enjoy while you can. Hugs MaryLynn
