As a parent you probably already know what a great educational tool playdough can be. You can actually make playdough at home. In order to do this you will need 1C salt; 1C flour; 1C water; food coloring (optional); a bowl; a wooden spoon; a rolling pin
Once you have these items you will need to:
1. Use the wooden spoon to mix the salt and flour together in a bowl
2. If you want colored playdough, add a few drops of food coloring to the water. Otherwise you can skip this process.
3. Slowly add the water to the other ingredients.
4. Knead the mixture until it is smooth and elastic but not so much that it is sticky.
5. Place flour on a flat surface.
6. Lay the playdough on the flour and roll it out with the rolling pin.
Now you can have fun using cookie cutters, plastic knives, bottle caps, lids, chopsticks and different shaped items to play with the playdough. This is a great educational tool but it is also a great way to have fun with your child.

My grandma made this for me frequently when I was a kid. It's really fun, works just like store-bought playdough (except tends to dry a little faster if left out), and is way cheaper.
The only caution I would add is that if you put in too much food coloring to get a darker color, it can stain your kids' hands when they play with the dough. After I spent a couple of days with green hands once when I was little, my grandma stuck to pastel colors- just a few drops.

As an adult I understand why my mom did not want us to play with that stuff inside unless we were off the carpet and had paper under us. Now I feel the same way as she did. I wold place some type of tarp for my grandchild to sit on and she could play as long as she wanted. When she got up the stuff was back in the cup.

I'm the same way. I don't like having it all over the house either. I make my daughter play on a plastic serving tray since she prefers to do everything on the floor.
