Taking Photo of the screen.

Hey guys, I have lately and even earlier seen people posting photos of their monitor.In other words photos of internet or even the desktop without using a real camera and taking the photo by yourself.I heard somewhere that there is a function in computers that you have to press some keys and the monitor will take the photo of itself.Is it true ??Is it possible??If yes,then can you tell me how to do so?? Thanks!!
