Definitely phone, there is so much missed nuance in chat...you don't know HOW they are saying something! Even with caps & all the requisite squigles & stuff!

I am a definiate phone person. I really dont like chatting with people on the internet, if I can talk to them on the phone. It's much more personal on the phone. I enjoy hearing their voice, versus reading the words.

It depends on what you want. With my friends I prefer talking over the phone, big time, but chatting has it's good points to - one thing is that you get the chance to think a little about what you are ´saying, another that you can communicate with several people at the same time. And also, it is a good and interesting way to meet new people, dating or finding friends in new countries!
But for talking with the people you already know, friends and family, phone is better.
That's my oppinion

Ugh. I HATE talking on the phone. My ear gets all hot, and I really bother the people near me because I'm talking so much. My throat gets raw, and frankly it's a little boring. When I'm chatting with someone online, I'm improving my typing skills, and if I have to go to the bathroom or something, I can just get up and go without worrying about them hearing anything. Of course, with chatting online you do have to worry about carpal tunnel syndrome, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.
