Is Twilight really THAT good or is it just all hype?

I've been hearing a lot of things about this book series by Stephenie Meyer and I can't help but wonder if it's just popular and people are riding the bandwagon. Is the quality of writing really great? Does it stand head and shoulders above other vampire novels, Anne Rice's books perhaps? Please enlighten me on the TWILIGHT book series, because I don't want to waste my money buying something that I would regret later.

It is a goofy movie. It was made for the pre-teen crowd, so you can't expect that much. As far as I am concerned, it is just hype. Extensive hype. I saw the movie in the theaters, and it was okay; but very sappy and some of the lines/side actors were just disturbingly bad. I am not really a fan of movies that takes vampires and mold them into something...wierd...I mean, in this film they stepped into the light and they glistened like a diamond. I sat there and said to myself, "Don't vampires die in the sunlight?" I never read the books though, so I can't really answer your questions about that.

vampires are a fictional creature. their strengths and weaknesses vary from culture to culture and author to author. after all, in Bram Stokers Dracula, widely considered the source of most modern vampire mythology, Dracula himself could not be killed by sunlight. he was weak in daylight, but not harmed. in fact, in the final scene he was exposed to the light of the sun, but it was a knife through the heart and decapitation that killed him, not the sun. it was later re-tellings of this story that gave him a more fatal reaction to sunlight. I have to admit, these are the first SPARKLY vampires I've encountered, and I rather like it :D

again though, that's not new. a lot of vampire authors write in such a way that the vampires are really just humans with different dietary requirements. I mean, if you were to become a vampire right now, why would your morals change? presumably good people and bad people would become vampires. I expect that very few people, if they were to become a vampire, would be so unpleasant as the stereotypical view. and you have to sort of see that most people would really struggle morally and emotionally. a vampire is often written as one struggling with their own instincts and emotions.

I like her take on vampires personally. I think the fact that it's completely DIFFERENT is what caught me off guard and makes it unforgettable.

hype. Its the most boring vampire novel I have ever read. And I have read a few. I almost put it down and I can make it through most any book no matter how bad. There were a few interesting novel things about the story line but not enough to keep the book going for me. The plot was slow and the characters hard to connect to and there was not catch at the end to keep you reading to the next one.

I am 19 and I absolutely loved all four books but I'm sure you expected that so I'll give you another perspective. I got my grandmother into reading all four books and she finished them as fast as I did and we watched the movie last night. My grandmother is over 50 years old and I also got my ex-boyfriend into the books and my 28 year old friend loved them as well. I say try it before you knock it.

Really. Why does it have to be written so GREAT as long as it interests people and they enjoy reading it?

I would agree. People who don't think they'll like it should think about what they do like in the most basic of terms and either test the theory, or not even read it/watch it. I don't like to see people bash something I enjoy, especially this because at face value I didn't think I'd like it at all but I can't imagine having passed it up now. I'd also urge people who are not teens not to judge it harshly, even if you think it's adolescent nothing, that's not at ALL how it is lol. In my very humble opinion of course.

You know me and my husband were wondering the same thing. It just seemed over hyped and the commercials doesn't really tell much about the story just that the girl identified him as a vampire. I asked this girl in second life about it and she said that ; she normally doesn't like any vampire books or movies, but she said her cousin made her read it and now her and her husband love the books. She says it's a very nice love story. Now that am just thinking about it I wonder if the story is more like buffy and angels love story from the show Buffy the vampire Slayer.

I love Buffy and Angel and their story but the two stories are actually completely different. If you haven't considered reading it, I'd suggest it. Up until the 5th chapter of the first book it is very teenager appealing. The books get much better after that.

It is NOT the 'typical' vampire story, although the beginning is just a little slow. The problem with the commercials is that they are so short and do not give away much. When a movie is made FROM a book, that means that a screenplay is written, and in many cases there are differences from the book, things left out, etc. When a movie is made and then a book is written FROM a movie, then they are almost exactly the same. In this case, the books were all written first and then came the movie. There is a lot of background stuff that is left out of the movie, so people who try to say it is one dimensional etc really ought to read the books. This is also not Shakespeare or any other 'fantasy/vampire' author so try not to compare it to anything like that.

Really okay well in that case I will have to read it, because the girl in second life told me that the book is not your typical vampire store and there is not a lot of bloody.

Speaking as a published writer.... The writing is not that good. The narrative is clunky, confused, stilted and inconsistent. The characters are very one-dimensional and cardboard, the plot is very singular and leaves a great deal unexplored, and words are often used improperly. I won't get into the plot, because that's personal opinion, but as far as the technical writing goes...it's very shoddy. It's mostly just hype, as the author has created the personification of every heterosexual teenage girl's fantasy in the main male character.

Keep in mind - this is ONE person's opinion. OPINION. You may or may not agree but please don't take this ONE opinion as fact and decide (or not) to buy or not buy the books or movie. In MY opinion, the books are better, or at least read the saga first, but I like to read and often movies made from books leave out a lot. The book is over 500 pages (the first one) which is a little hard to translate directly into a 2 hour movie. PS: entertainment is not billed as 'perfect'. In fact, the more entertaining something is, the less perfect it actually is.

I was skeptical when I first thought about reading Twilight. I have no interest whatsoever in vampires. But my younger sister talked me into reading the first book. I really enjoyed it! I read the second book also. I'm now waiting for the 3rd to come out in paperback. I think it's worth reading. I mean it's a book about vampires for young adults, but look at the wide variety of people out there that are reading it!

I don't think you'll regret reading it, if that's what you're worried about. I wasn't even interested until I was GIVEN the first book... and then prodded on FB to read it lol. I'm getting the movie too, I saw it finally in the theater about a week before it left the theater in preparation for it to come out on dvd. The thing is, there is a lot about the movie that may not be the way you imagine it when reading the book. People have their own ideas about each of the main characters when reading that might be totally unlike the actors that portray them in the movie. For instance, the only three who were EXACTLY as I envisioned just from reading were Bella, Alice, and Jasper. Even Jacob wasn't exactly right, based on my ideas before seeing the movie. I won't get into my idea of Edward, Rob was fine, just different.

I'm a published author, I've been critiqued by other authors, and IN MY OPINION, it's a decent series. The words can strike very beautifully, the imagery sets the tone, and it does take a unique stance on the vampire genre. I'm not a fan by any means, but then I can't really describe myself a fan of many authors or series'. I like it. I don't love it, I like it. Personally, I think many people hate it because it's popular. I'd probably chafe a little more if I hadn't read the first book before it got mega popular. I'll remind people, writers included, that writing is an artform...it's subjective. Grammar only accounts for so much, and obviously, her grammar's acceptable, elsewise she would never have been published. Get off your high horses already. If you wanna see dreadful grammar; I'd suggest reading the Fallen trilogy that was made into a movie by abc family. Why don't you borrow the book from the library? Read it first, decide if you like it enough to buy it. I'm not sure if Twilight is epic enough to be ranked up there with Anne Rice -- perhaps only time can tell us that? Remember, not all fantasy fans agree that the Chronicles of Narnia can compare with, say, Tolkien's works...well known or not. But it's entered into the list of "books that show how the genre's progressed"...so that's something, no? And really, it gets that spot because of it's uniqueness...not how good or awful it is in someone's opinion. Sparkly vampires, sheesh.

I haven't read it yet myself. But from what I understand, it is getting all the hype because it is so good. If you are concerned just borrow the books from someone or the library and don't spend the money. I am sure it would not be hard to find someone who owns the books, the way they have been selling.

I have read all four of the twilight series. They are one of the best book series I have read. It is a combination of romance, full of thrills and excitement. Though I did not buy the books. I borrowed them from my sister who is an avid collector of books. LOL

Don't waste your money at all! The books are very poorly written. I have friends that are huge fans of the series, and even they agree that the books are terrible! I personally don't get the appeal of Twilight at all. The characters are obnoxious and very unlikeable, the story is very "teenage girl fantasy" and not at all interesting, plus the vampires really aren't all that vampire-y. I have no idea why the books are so popular.

Ah. You missed the point entirely. You cannot read them expecting them to be some well crafted masterpiece... the main characters are HIGH SCHOOL kids. The story is greater than the sum of its parts, breaking it down really ruins the big picture. I could compare it to someone griping about bad takes in a movie - why pick on the errors or what you consider 'bad writing'? Obviously it's a best seller for a reason, and no, it's not just a bunch of 12 year olds reading it or buying the movie. Trust me.

The first two, Twilight and New Moon are in paperback, the best place (prob cheapest) to check is Walmart or Target. Walmart never seems to have anything I look for so I go to Target. I'm not sure when Eclipse and Breaking Dawn will be in paperback but check amazon.com.

twilight isn't really that super good..but at least it is still good enough to be read!it may not have the high brow literary appeal of anne rice's vampire novels but it is still worth reading at least for its simplicity and "charming" romantic appeal...the vampires here are like one of us...humanely charming...the 4 books beginning with twilight are still collectible..at least for me....the movie a bit soft..but the casting makes the difference...that's why it's ablockbuster..the appeal is universal...the actors have been chosen well!anyway just give it a try...happy reading inkyuboz!..im a certified twilighter..have been bitten by edward cullen..the most lovaeble of all the vampires ever!excellently portrayed by the british actor robert pattinson who really do justice to the role...

Pattinson did a good job with the acting but he's not as good looking as the book makes Edward out to be. Okay choice but not superb.

Its all opinion - but I adore the series. A lot of people probably are jumping on the bandwagon - but there is a huge amount of true fans for good reason. I was VERY reluctant to try them but a friend told me to read the first two chapters before saying no. I did...and couldn't put it down. I read Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse the next three days and had to wait a few months for Breaking Dawn. I'm not really into the vampire thing - but this story is unique in so many ways that I couldn't help but fall in love with them. I suggest doing the same thing I did - try a few chapters and see if you, too, fall in love with Bella's character. I think you will be in for a surprise!

Well I started reading the first book cause it was on my library's "reader's choice" list.I've never really read any of Anne Rice's books,I watched Queen of the Damned (I think that's her...).I think most people are just playing "follow the leader" and reading the Twilight series. But I actually think it's pretty good.It kind of plays Bella as a helpless little girl but otherwise I liked it.

Well i loved the movie. because it is all about romance and love. I am a girl and it is a chick flick . So yes it is wonderful in my eyes. I even liked the ending lol. Vampires can be mysterious and kinda romantic if they portray them that way. In this movie thats the way they are protrayed . At least the guy vamp who fell for the girl. if you dont like chick flicks you probably wont like it

the quality of the writing isn't that great. she wasn't an author before this, and you can tell. the story is very cheesy, and very cliched. but somehow it's still utterly charming and addictive. I love the books, even if I can see their many flaws.

Im not a big fan of reading, it takes a really good book to make me want to read through the whole entire thing. I zipped right through twilight I loved it so much. I read the second and third book in less than a week and its not like those books are short. I was in higschool at the time and spent every class and waking moment reading those books that I could and finished it quicky. Its easy to lose yourself in those books, fantasizing what that life would be like. The books are quite cheap to..the first onne is like 10 bucks?, I think youd love it enough to not regret spending that 10 lol. The movie was great to. I saw it in the theatres and my theatre was cheering and clapping they were so excited/happy for the movie. Its just easy to fantasize. The perfect boy right there.

people who've read the book & seen the movie told me that the book was better. Me, i didnt read the books & i've only seen the first 10 min. of the movie so i really cant say. but people say that in the book they made edward cullen sexy as hell & they chose the wrong character to play him in the movie, so that kind of ruined it for them.

I have watched the Twilight movie and read about the Second book (New Moon). What I can say is that it is not really that well crafted but I enjoyed reading it. The words used are not as outstanding as other authors would use. They are just simple. Perhaps it was put that way to cater for the young readers like teenagers. I enjoyed the story. You can finish the book easily, without much analysis. Basically it is a love story. It is not really about vampires. It is just part of the story.
