Cemeteries hold a strange fascination for me. Especially the very old ones with the angels and arches carved on the tombstones .You always go into a somber mood feeling that you are dragged into a different world. It is a world of absolute reality strewn with innumerable stories of personal pleasures and anguishes. Reading what has written on the tombstones unfold the entire life of the person who is interned there.
I used to go to the hills of Munnar for my holidays. Once as we I was trekking my brother in law showed a tomb and told that it is the tomb of a teenage British bride who has married a British Government officer working in making the roads in that mountains. It seems that she succumbed to Malaria fever common to that dense forest those days.
The face of the man who married her and brought to India fleeted across my mind for a moment which was enough to make my heart heavy and sink.
Cemeteries are beautiful in their own way.

I do not visit cemetires very often. I have gone there on rare occasions and I found the history written on some of the graves quite touchy and moving.

Yes you are right. This kind of thing bring us back into reality.
Nothing wrong with that.
I myself also like going to cemeteries.
I have had two experiences where I could feel I was not alone.
And yes it was dark.
I have not been to a cemetery for a long time.
There is not one around here.
My BF does not like it when I talk about my experiences.
So, I leave it.
If it is meant to be, it will come by itself.
Take care.

I did not have to try it just happened. Twice I was with other people and I start talking about things I know nothing about. As if someone is trying to communicate through me to the people that are with me. It was a strange experience, but very positive both times.
I was so tired afterward's.
Trying to speak to them, with them?
I think it is better to let them rest, when they want to communicate they will let me know.
It is not something to play around with.
When we die it will be soon enough to find out what we don't know now.
Take care, have a nice day!

No I do not visit cemeteries because I think they are interesting although I must admit when I was 16 and first got my drivers license some friends and I use to go to the cemetery every Sunday afternoon...please do not ask me why as I have no idea how we came up with it...and no, we did not do it to vandalize the gravesides or anything, we were always very respectful!

Yes, I love visiting cemeteries precisely for the reasons you have mentioned. Here in Calcutta we have famous cemeteries of British era and its really like a Sunday winter outing to go and visit them. So much of history is to be found there and specially I remember we were in school and reading about a certain personality and later my mom took me to the cemetery to see his grave. I was so thrilled…you get to know a lot about the old heritage of a city from the cemeteries. However, all cemeteries are not well-maintained and the writings on the tombstones have all but become too hazy. Also, I have not visited any Islamic cemetery as I think I wont be able to understand anything as I cant read Urdu.

Yeah, same here. I do like to visit graves but those only of my loved ones. It's really a solemn and memorable time for me to reminisce wonderful times we were still together. Most importantly, it's my time to pray for them to let them know that they're still remembered.

Yes it is interesting to visit the cemetery and reading the tombstones most especially. Visiting the grave also gives me a chance to contemplate on the shortness of life. A reality that someday soon each one will die. It gives me all the more much reason to believe in God and trust in his saving grace.

I love visiting the cemetery but not to see the graves, i think it is a peaceful place to be. Here our cemetery is next to the ocean and there is an old abandoned church. i like to go visit it ay night and i sit on the benches looking at the water. It is a calming site for me.

My eyesight isn't that good, so I would not be able to see what's written on the memorial stones. Pictures are interesting though, because those are usually close-ups. My husband and I stayed in a motel across from a cemetary. LOL We could see it from our room. LOL Didn't creep us out at all.

maybe if it's family cemetery or historical then I will visit
but other than that I wouldn't
even if this cemetery is well taken care of I still don't see it is a must visit or fun place to visit

Hi riyasam. I like to do this and I do often. I like to walk among the monuments reading who is resting in each one and feeling the peace of the place. I find it helpful when I need to think about something that is difficult. The cemetery I ever go is one near (more or less) to my home and it is an old cemetery. I like to visit the sepultures from people that made the History of my country. It is nice to look at the sepultures and think: I have learned about he/she in the books of History and now I'm here in front him/her, near to him/her corps. It was a real person and made the difference for all the country and all the people.
I really like to feel it. So when I am teaching about them I can tell about the person behind the historical fact and it give more life to the lesson.
Have a nice weekend.

Cemetries are the most peaceful place as the residents are all resting in peace. They don't normally have visitors except during all souls day. This is the only time when this place turn into a mini park with lots of fresh flowers and lighted candle giving it the glow once a year. The silence and spookiness of this place is not inviting and so are often neglected.
