I think my cat needs therapy!

We have a 2 1/2 yr old spayed female that we've had since she was 6 weeks old. She has been loved, cuddled and adored since we brought her home. Her name is Libby and I seriously think she needs therapy.
She is a typical cat in that she is very affectionate (when she wants to be) and very independent. However, she has a really bad habit that I just can't seem to break and I refuse to have her declawed as then she won't be able to defend herself.
She will scratch on stuff (my wooden kitchen chairs, the boxspring, the walls, your pant leg, whatever) to express her boredom, her displeasure, cause she's miffed about something, there's not enough food in her dish or just because.
She is an indoor/outdoor cat and we live on a rural acreage (with coyotes, eagles, owls) and so Libby must have her claws to defend herself.
I have tried sprays, newspaper, raising my voice (all she does is lower herself to the floor - never runs away, never met a cat who did this), all to no avail.
She will wake us up at whatever time cause she thinks we should get up now!
Now that the weather has warmed up, when Libby misbehaves I put her outside. I have had cats all of my life but never had one so determined - any suggestions? Please don't suggest something mean, I will not reply to those who would abuse a pet.

Yea I Agree with CJscott I have two cats and use a water bottle on My One bad cat she likes to sleep on top of My Parrots cage with him. But yes it Does work very well. I used to have Nine cats but moved and could not bring them all with me just one and then went to a shelter and picked one up. I have had cats all my life and now my wife wants dogs which are ok but i would rather have cats..lol
