a friend of mine is getting married in a few months. i was shocked to see that the reception fees and even church fees are hefty and indeed no joke!
i was wondering on how to save when it comes to planning your wedding. for example, is there a way to save on flowers? how about the wedding invitations? or souvenirs?
one of my friends suggested that an unorthodoxie way of making wedding invites is to use brown-colored board paper and print your own invites. it may not sound as high profile and formal as a professionally made invitation, but it's rather unique and unusual to get a "sepya" invitation saying, "it's our special day on ____. make it more special y being there," with a thin pink insert indicating the entourage, etc.
how about you? any ideas on how to be crafty in planning a wedding? there are so many details in a wedding that the options are endless. perhaps we can come up with artistic ideas on how to save more money... ^_^

When my son got married, I made all the floral tiaras for the bridesmaids and hoops with flowers woven in. I used artificial flowers but depending on when the wedding is and what garden flowers are available, they could be done with fresh flowers from the garden, keeping the cost down even more, or even small posies of flowers could be made with a doily and dangling ribbons. Invitations can always be made using the computer and whatever paper they choose to print it on. Parchment is quite nice too, with perhaps a gold border. Also, for my son's wedding, I wrote and printed off all the order of service and made the bridal favours. I made all the table centres from flowers and did all the catering for the evening. Hard work, I'll admit but I wasn't short of help from my sisters and others. I made special food for the evening and it went down very well. During the day, we had caterers and a sit-down meal, but even that could be done personally... it's not difficult to do cold meats and salads, and pretty them up.
Brightest Blessings my friend.

oh i would so love to save on my wedding day... i would love to not do the cookie-cutter "church wedding followed by hotel reception" plan.
perhaps i can go for a gorgeous (not tacky looking) garden wedding with a garden reception. this would definitely cut costs when it comes to catering, because the garden may not necessarily be meant for weddings and may not have their own caterers (unlike hotels who come with their own caterers).
but it seems that i can't find decent outdoor venues in my place. i have yet to look for a suitable almost secluded burst of nature here. if i do find it, i'll make sure to make a mental note. ^_^
the flowers can indeed be expensive if done by a flowershop. the flowers for the church are even a different set from the flowers of the reception, so you pay double! making your own flowers will definitely be a chance to save money. it can be done beautifully in a professional looking way without spending too much. ^_^

I don't know about there, but here, civil weddings are quite popular... you know, in stately manors and that kind of place. Very few people go for hotel receptions here any more because of the expense. Quite often, with a civil wedding, you can have the ceremony in one room and just walk across the hall for the reception and bar. Also, some of the places have very nice grounds for photographs and everything.
I suppose people are going back towards the "handfastings" that pagan people often have. It's much the same, but performed by a pagan high priest/priestess and it lasts for a year and a day, or however long you want it to basically. If, after a year and a day, you decide it's not what you both want, you can have a reversal ceremony. It's all the same basic idea, but with its little differences. I guess you could have a minister there instead of the high priest/priestess and make it a life-long joining, but in the form of a handfasting, if you know what I mean. Have I confused you yet? lol

Hi Sandra...Im getting used to writing to myself!!
I guess it all depends on how important certain aspects of the wedding are to the individual person..
Heres what I have always thought.
I purchased my invitations at the dollar store. No fancy printing expenses for me. Its just an invitation, its the ceremony thats important and what you do with your life afterwards. Many will just get thrown away eventually anyways and why spend a fortune for something that will be tucked away probably out of site, unless they plan on framing invitations and putting them on the wall, which I highly doubt. So having purchased them for a dollar, I then purchased a pack of embellishments from the same dollar store and dressed them up a bit. Theres lots of need stuff there and you can make them your own.
I didnt pay any church fees as I got married outside, near the water, which is my favourite place to be. As soon as you step inside the church door, up goes the fees. But then again, some people wouldnt want to do that.
Also, instead of renting a hall and paying a few hundred for that, I used the party room in a local restaurant. It was free to use since I was ordering from their menu, buffet style. THey also let us rearrange the tables afterwards to allow ample room for dancing.
Also, there was no way I was paying over $100 for a cake! I made my own. What I did was a fall theme. I made a tier out of cupcakes so there was no messy cake to cut. Each person helped themselves to a cupcake. I bought the plastic ladder and figurines of bride and groom, again from the dollar store, to look like they were climbing the cake. I arrange plastic fall coloured leaves,,(from guess where???)...around the base. It was beautiful.
As little souvenirs, since the wedding and dinner were at a chinese restaurant, I bought chopsticks enough for everyone, in bulk on ebay. In fact I bought my wedding dress there also for $125..it was gorgious!..I dont beleive in spending a ton of money for something that lasts for 10 minutes, and in years to come, you will look back at the wedding photos and laugh at how outdated your dress is!!!

thanks for your ideas! ^_^ i'm actually thinking of getting invitations at a cheap part of the neighborhood... hehehe. they don't look cheap at all; they look highly professional! the paper inserts (those thin sheets of paper inside the invitaion with all the info on the entourage, etc) may actually make the invitation more expensive, so i'm thinking of printing those instead with my own printer. they won't look cheap because the invitation itself looks flashy.
the chopsticks idea is great for chinese weddings, or even with any kind of wedding with chinese food! chopsticks are cheap but they look unique and are good for souvenirs. put a ribbon on them and you're done!
unfortunately, i have yet to find good restaurants here who can cater to a lot of people without messing up, lol ^_^ hopefully i get lucky!

Hey sandra! I'm sure that there are ways the nowadays you
can save on a wedding if you are good with crafts and have
the ingenuity! And I'm sure there a lots of good wedding
planning sites on the Net that will give you some great tips
as to how to save and plan accordingly! The bride could have
her family and wedding party help with different parts of
the planning. A friend of mine who is very crafty was making
some beautiful wedding favors for her friends wedding! They
were amazing! So all you need is some talent and you really
can save a bundle! If someone is really good with flowers
they could possibly make the center pieces for the tables
and things like that!

hi, opal!
yes, it takes a creative streak to save money on weddings. ^_^ i have my doubts about putting it to use, though, as making 500 souvenirs is not easy, lol ^_^ sometimes i think it might be simpler to just pay for the souvenirs. still, there are other ideas that take little time to implement but save a lot of money, so i'm still searching for those.
hopefully i get ideas on how to save money, other than making the souvenirs... though i can't think of any right now. ^_^ thanks, friend!
