I started learning English in the 5th grade and in the 7th grade I started learning German. In some schools the students were able to choose French instead fo German, but English is mandatory for everyone. In the old days English and other languages were not past of the timetable, but now everyone has to learn some English. In high school I chose the language line and I studied English, German and French. I haven't used German and French much since I left school, but I use English all the time. I live nn a small country and and few people understand our local language, so without English we wouldn't be able to communicate with the rest of the world.

Yes English was one subject I studied, but it wasn't my favorite. I really found it boring. But now I love the English language and work very hard to make no spelling mistakes or grammatical errors. I appreciate how easy it is to express yourself in the English language. I speak no other language, but if you can speak English fluently you can go anywhere and be understood.

Even students in schools that are in English speaking countries have "English" classes to learn grammar and so forth. Sometimes it is referred to as Language Arts but learning to write and use language is a part of education. You might be surprised how many people have had these classes.
