Fear of anything usually starts when you were traumatized by it at some point in your life. But with regards to aquaphobia it could also be that when you were bitten by a rabid dog and has contracted rabies from it you might have symptoms of fear of water. But most of phobias are based on traumatic experience that stayed with you and developed into something that you cannot control anymore. There are no real cure for this except by desensitizing your fear for it meaning you will be constantly exposed to the object that triggers the fear until you finally have overcome the fear yourself or at least you have minimized to to a level that can be controlled by you.

Normally, like many fears, it developes from a traumatic experiance. One of the consequences for some is the fear of taking bathes.
