What kind of synchronization?

Synchronization- something I never understand though I'm a computer student 
How will you define it?
Actually, The series of events once I experienced was:
1. My hard disk crashed. It had some foreign songs sent to my sister (elder, mind it) by her friends. She cherished them.
2. I got a chance to show my smartness and somehow copied those songs from crashed disk to my pendrive. Real smart!
3. Now time to save them on other computer.. I plugged in my device. Media player popped up with an option to synchronize these songs. I said, yes why not.
4. Now it starts. All my songs are deleted first (why?) Now my sister is mad at me. 
What is synchronization? Why did it demolish all my efforts?? WHY?

I think synchronization is the process of being updated.
