paypal- do you need to verify your account to be able to spend money online

I recently just opened a paypal account to collect earnings from some online sites that payout. I was wondering though, do I have to verify my account and give paypal my bank account information if I am not going to use it for anything but receiving money from online sites and buying things off the web?
