My cat catches and eats spiders and flies!

My cat, Libby, is a natural born killer when it comes to flies, spiders, moths, pretty much anything that moves that is smaller than her!
I am terrified of spiders, so I knock it onto the floor (preferably with something with a long, long handle), call Libby and she catches it (well, she does usually play with it for awhile - yuck) then eats it. Most disgusting... but also most effective.
The first night we spent here, we heard Libby under the bed - crunching on something - ewww - when we looked though she was just in the middle of swallowing it. From the sound of the crunching, I think it was a pretty big bug...
I always watch her now as she will do "spider patrol" and she sits and stares up at the ceiling. If she can't reach it, she will cry until someone lifts her up to get it or knock it onto the floor for her to eat.
Now I am all grossed out - I should have picked a different topic as I just ate lunch!

My cats are the same way. Actually, my dogs are too. I had to laugh when you mentioned lifting your cat up to get a bug. I've done the same thing.

My cat is a predator, my dog is a marshmallow who can be afraid of shadows... he's a great dog too though, just super cautious.
I lol when I read that I made you laugh... best thing I've done all day then. I hope it brightened your day.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who does this.
Thanks and happy mylotting.

You are so welcome, my friend. I wanted to tell you that I love your avatar. Your dog is so cute. Is he lab/rotti cross? I absolutely adore rottis and rottis crossed with labs or shepherds.
You must have started with mylot at the beginning? I can't imagine having as many posts!
How many cats and how many dogs do you have? I only have one of each right now, Libby and Rocky. I want more, more, more but have to be patient till we renovate the bigger place.
Have a great day and happy mylotting!

Yah, she's a sweet cat when she wants to be. It's cool to watch them flip around in the air after moths. Libby will do the same with mosquitos too!
Do your cats eat the moths too? LIbby gets plenty to eat, plus treats so it's not cause she's hungry...

My cat chases and catches any bugs she can find. She does not eat them, she just plays with them until she gets bored, or kills them and then she leaves them where they sit. She is a black and white tuxedo cat, mostly black. My Son named her Megatron, knowing she was a female. She is very amusing because she fetches things that intrigue her like lego pieces, (this is what started her fetching) buttons, beads, marbles and her latest favorite, safety pins. When she wants to play fetch, she finds the item she wants to play with, brings it to me, drops it and meows. Meg tends to be a little shy about new things and new people, so when I want to show off her fetching skills, she runs off. My Son filmed her fetching so we have proof she does it.

All the other cats I've had in my life have been like yours. They would play with bugs, but never eat them. They were all excellent mousers though, and I was always finding carcasses in the yard, on the porch, etc.
Cats are the most amazing creatures! You should put your video on FHV, you could win big money! Libby doesn't play fetch, but does do lots of other amusing things. She loves to get in the shower, even when someone's in there!
Thanks for your response and happy mylotting!

One of my cats, Smokey, used to eat June bugs. I'd bring a nice fat hissing June bug in for one of the other cats to play with but as soon as she discovered it down the hatch. Once she swallowed one whole and you could see the lump going down the front of her neck. Now that she is an older cat she isn't so interested in bugs.

EWWW! June bugs are so disgusting... and big! I don't know if I could bring one in the house for any reason!
Love Libby, but she better not be bringing any bugs in the house - she can keep them outside with her mice and shrews...
Perhaps Libby will outgrow her bug fascination, I guess we have to wait and see.
Thanks for your response and have a great day!

Thats pretty much typical cat behavior. My only suggestion would be to be careful with the spiders. If Libby gets ahold of a Black Widow or similar posionous spiders she can get sick or even die from the posion, just as if she were bitten.

I have had many cats in my life and the others would always play with a bug, or whatever, till they got bored with it and sometimes they might eat it. But this cat actively looks for spiders, moths, etc. Also, she will kill mice, shrews, etc and leave them on the porch for us to see, but she never eats them. I think I prefer her to be eating the bugs.
Thanks and happy mylotting.
