Okay. Sorry for the weird topic, but I can't blame the English class (I really want to, but I can't) for having us think about or make us do our finals project. Well, it is about Speech Competence and I want to know how is English important to all of us.
Please share your ideas about my question. Even I have my own ideas about it, I want to still know other people's ideas about this. It would be a great help for my project. Thank you.
Hehehehe.

English is the universal language
I have been to other countries like Thailand, its also a touristic place like Philippines but local people (even in the capital city of Bangkok) doesn't speak or understnad English. When me and my bf were going to checked in the hotel where we booked, the receptionist could not understand us. I demanded the manager, as his name was on the confirmation email he sent us -- Mark Oliver Samonte- he's a Filipino too! My bf said that Filipinos are really good in speaking English compared to other Asian countries.
Its hard to communicate with someone like Thais if they can't speak or understand English. I am mostly mistaken as Thai because of my Asian looks and resemblance to them.

Well its true, thats why call centers in India are closed and being transferred here because we Filipinos can imitate the neutral accent of the westerners.

If I am not mistaken Philippines is the only Asian country who is fluent in English. Some other surveys that my friend saw in the net, I am not sure if it is true yet.
Yah, it is really hard to understand people who couldn't even understand English. I wonder how asian hotels understand people who check in that they couldn't even speak English.

Hi, taki_takaishi, your name is very weird.
When I am a university students, I don't think English is very important and I even said that I can live better than most of people without english. Certainly, my english is very bad , I don't pass the CET-4. Two years ago, I joined in a foreign company because of good technology, I couldn't listening and speaking, reading and writing also needed a dictionary. So, some people had a promotion with the same technology as me, but I was rejected. From that time, I know english is very improtant even though you don't realize it now.

Thats a fairly easy one. English is s universal language, widely used everywhere.
If you want to travel or do business worldwide, its very helpful to be able to speak english in order to communicate. Its the one language, that most professional people can speak the most. And the one language most often spoken in other countries

Why english language important? Because english is universal language. No matter waht's your nation, you still can connect to other people from other country with english language. English language is world communicator. That's why make it important to us. I think we should ask why english become universal language. Why not other language? If you want to be competitive globally, you need to learn English. If you notice, many non-English speaking countries are now offering English courses or subjects at school. This is usually true for Asian countries that are growing in economy like Korea, China and Japan. Learning English heightens the awareness of the people on the events outside their own countries, thus giving them a broader perspective. As the saying goes...knowledge is power.
Besides, you get to appreciate Britney Spears and Beyonce if you know english..LOL:p

Well, the answer is English is so popular now in this world. If you go to a foreign country, you can speak English to communicate with others. It is called universal language now. For example, if we can not speak english, we can not talk with so many friends on Mylot. So this is one of the benefit that English brings to us. When I was in college, my major is English. The full name is Enlish literature and language. I am glad to chose this major when I entered college.

Well, I guess English is as important to us as any other language, but I still think it holds a higher significance because it's a link between several different nations of different tongues and languages. I travel quite a bit, and there were always references to English, so I guess that it's a bit more pronounced than other languages. It's also very important to me because it's my first language, and the only real way I can communicate.

Basically just because it's one of the main langauges that are used to communicate with people from all over the world. English is my third language and it's probably even the one I express myself best in. Very simple to learn and since all the media (TV, Music etc) from America spreads to the rest of the world it's pretty good and easy to learn.
It's important because it's usually required for people to know at companies etc. I don't think that English is as important as some think though. Obviously it's important if you live in a country where English is spoken, but otherwise it's not important at all.

English is the language of the Commonwealth, the group of countries formed from the British Empire plus a few more added recently. America was part of the British Empire and so came under the influence of the English language. Today, the population of the Commonwealth is first in the world thanks to India being a member whose population is second after China.
With the expansion of sea travel, English became the official language and then as international air travel became popular, English became the official language in the air.
As travel became 'English' so did trade, as mentioned above.
So far as saying it is an easy language to learn - well I leave that up to others to judge! For me, I'm very impressed how well people from other lands have mastered English.

Hello taki. English language is important to us because every student at school are supposed to learn it and it is considered as one of the main subjects together with math, and Chinese, whether you are a students learning science or one learning arts. Besides, it is important to most of us as international business is usually done in this language, which is thought as the international language. College students won't be able to get their degrees without passing English examinations set by the Education Department. This kind of of English test is called CET Band 4 and Band 6. CET means College English Test. All college must pass at least CET Band4 before they get their degree. So that is why all the kids have to start to work hard at English for those reasons above. Of course, there are some other reasons that I have not listed here, like you can know more news about the foreign countries if you know English, etc. Thank you so much for the discussion. Take care, friend.

Hello there Taki, nice topic by the way, the main reason why we need to study English is to sound educated and be literate. In order to advance in the professional world, you must have proper English and good speech.
An additional reason for studying English is for communication. You are much more accepted in the world if you portray yourself better. People will think of you in a better way and you will have a better chance of being accepted. You will most likely also have more opportunities in life. We know that English is the universal language for foreigners to speak with other nationalities, just like we are doing here on Mylot.
Learning English never ends. English dictionary that has so many words that most people have never even utilized or heard. Learning to properly use one new word each week is a great way to continually learn to utilize the English language. Happy mylotting!

We all know that there are many countries and there are different languages around the world.
It is difficult for one person to learn those different languages.
English has its influence in business world, so many countries are familiar with English language.
And also we can't make any country language as an universally accepted language.
Hence English is accepted as Universally accepted language and has more important internationally.
