Have you ever received a scholarship?

Have you ever received a scholarship? When, from where, and how much did you receive? I find that it's incredibly hard to win/receive scholarships. I've been trying for YEARS (literally) to win scholarships from sites like Fastweb and Scholarship Experts - two major free scholarship directories. It's upsetting that although I've probably applied for at least FIFTY in the past two years, I've received NONE (except for ones I've received for financial reasons from the school I'm attending). I'm curious to see how many students (or past-students) on myLot have received scholarships. Does anyone have any tips for me? If you have received a scholarship, was it from a local source, or from a site such as Fastweb (or another internet scholarship directory)? How much was it for, and when did you get it? Thanks in advance!

I wish I could help, cause that would mean that I have gotten a few...but I have not yet gotten any other than ones from school baised on grades. It is hard to apply to all these scholarships and not get anything for the effort you put into it, but maybe a hand cramp :)

You put it so well, thank you! I totally agree. You put all this effort forth into trying to win these, and get absolutely NOTHING out of it (unless you win). It's sad.

And how about the fact those of us who have lived in the US since we were born, we have to stess about getting money for school while immergants get to go for free. Dont get me wrong, its great that we are willing to help others make a better life for themselves, but shouldnt we be helping our own before helping others? We have to bust tail to get a good education after high school and they get it handed over to them on a silver platter...is it just me or does something not seem right about that?

The only way for scholarships to be granted here in the Philippines is first, if you were financially in need (literally, if you were too poor to afford the tuition fees which requires official income tax files and stuff) or if you were previously a valedictorian in high school (for college) - and not even all colleges offer this. I never tried getting a scholarship online, there's only so few offered here in the Philippines and since my parent could have afforded my education, I didn't want to take somebody else's chance of education :) I hope you get your scholarship! Thanks for the response on my discussion!

I'm thinking about it - may be in a couple of years if things would work out well. It's pretty tough getting the right visa in order to study there and work at the same time :P Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Well, it looks like we both aren't in very good situations regarding paying tuition costs, then are we? lol. Come over the U.S.! There are SO many scholarships available to people who aren't born here, it's amazing. Tons of my friends who have "ethnic backgrounds" (emigrated from another country or just have a racial background of something other than caucasion) have gotten scholarships based on this alone and a GPA of 2.5 or higher (or something like that). Seriously!

I did my M.A course on a local scholarship-it wasnt so much but could add up to about $3000. It was offered to me by an Austrian scholarship organsization, Horizont 3000 based here in Uganda.

i was so surprised when my friends told me i was one of the two students in our school who was able to pass the department of science and technology scholarship for college. but the requirements were to get a science related course or an engineering course so i took up engineering. and that you have to pass all subjects in the first and second year. in the third year you should only have one or two fail grades i am not sure anymore. so there was a time i flunked in three subjects so i lost the scholarship =( gone were the allowances, free tuition fees, etc.

Yikes. That definitely is the scary part about going to school on someone else's money (the government or a scholarship foundation). They are extra picky when it comes to the grades you have to get. That's unfortunate that you failed your classes - but at least now you've learned your lesson, and at least now you have the freedom to pursue whatever kind of subject you'd like.

Hi! I'd like to say someting about me. I had ever received scholarships three times during the years 2002-2004 when I was an undergraduate student, which were offered by my University. At that time my family couldn't offer enough money for me, so I had to make money by myself. I made up my mind to won the scholarship and study hard all day. Then I got great academic achievements, so I did it. But the scholarships were not much, equivalent to 150$ per year. I had to do part-time jobs to pay for my tuition fees and everyday needs. I was a little tired but I felt happy because I could support myself. Now I have got through the difficult periods and I often recall those meaningful days. Maybe the scholarship system in my country is quite different for yours. However, don't give up and continue to work hard. Best wishes for you!

Students today are so very lucky to have the internet (you can now just search online to look for any available scholarship, during my college years, I ended up going in a local community college since It is very difficult to look for sponsors in our place.. I know there's a lot of scholarship offered in your country.. At least now, (that I am older) I was approved to study a bachelors degree on-line for free (but sorry it is only intended for the locals in our place) .. ......................... maezee, please accept me as your friend...i would be glad to share to you the site which you can earn cash legally.. I assure you it would be a great help for you.. thanks...

ONE type of scholarship I had was of my parents...LOL they have saved in an educational plan for my college education... and also scholarship in my school everytime my grades reach a specific cut-off for the grant they are offering only ONCE having a 100% scholarship, TWICE with 25% scholarship and Three times 50% scholarship. I must say this are blessings from God with hard work of course like concentrating with my studies then. But online scholarship... never had ONE! PRAY ALWAYS and STUDY MORE = Scholarship Hope it will help and work for you as well. God bless

Wow! That's great for your friend. I haven't been lucky at all, like you, and the big problem is that I work to pay for my own living expenses - and I just don't make enough to put aside thousands of dollars (such as I could've received if I won scholarships). . Thanks for responding!

Unfortunately, I have never won a scholarship. I have looked everywhere for scholarships but it seems so hard to find them these days. There are so many people in need of them and so little scholarships. I will continue to look for more scholarships, but so far- no luck :(
