In-Laws.... Love 'em or hate 'em?

My mother in law is making a point of telling EVERYONE we aren't coming for Christmas.... even though we are coming the day after Christmas and staying through the second of January... which means we'll have my daughters first birthday there. But the fact we won't be there on Christmas day is a huge affront. So, do you face the same holiday nightmares, or do your inlaws love ya like their own?
