Locked in!!!

I was just locked in a windowless room and couldn't get out for awhile. Scary for sure. Our bathroom doorknob hasn't been working right, but I didn't dream it would quit working. So there I was locked in, with my guy not scheduled to come home for hours. It was also hot in there since there are no windows. So I vented my frustration on my hairbrush by beating the doorknob to death. LOL Yep, I attacked the knob and hinges with a pair of scissors and a hairbrush. Thankfully after pounding long enough to make my hand go numb and hurt like heck the doorknob was defeated! I am not going back into that bathroom until a new doorknob is put on. Its scary getting locked in like that. Does something like that scare you when you know you are stuck in a windowless room for hours and know no one will be home anytime soon? What would you have done to escape? Or would you just wait for help to arrive?

2 Christmas' ago, we met at my bro's girlfriend's house, and it turned out her hall bath's knob was broken, and I wasn't the ONLY one to get locked into it - I asked before I used it this last Christmas if the knob was fixed - trust me, I'd've yanked that knob before a second person got trapped in it!

is there some REASON you HAVE to shut the door?

Unfortunately I at least have to shut it, if not latch it. Outside the bathroom is a window. Right under that window is the meters for utility readers. I have no wish to be sitting on the toilet with the door open and wave at the meter reader at eye level. LOL I either have to get a new doorknob or just remember not to latch it.

This makes me think we should all keep tools strapped to the doors. LOL

Tess, I'm so glad you made it out ok. I would have done anything to get out of there. I'm claustrophobic and I would have beat that door knob till it Or I shattered. Being intombed in a small space without a window is scary as hell!! It just freaks me out. I guess you know where I stand.xoxoxo leenie

I think part of what scared me is my front door was open (just the screen door closed). And I was afraid someone would walk right in and rob the place. This neighborhood has a reputation for break ins.

I actually got locked in a room when I was a kid. The door swung shut on me while I was in a trailer on our property and the door would not open back up. I had to knock on the door to get someone's attention so they would know that I was stuck. I remember they thought I was just not trying but they finally realized the door was stuck. They had to get some tools to take the door off the hinges because the door just would not budge at all. Being a young child I was pretty scared. Luckily one of my favorite cats got locked in the room with me, it made it a lot easier. If I had been older I probably would have done more to try and get out. I would have tried every possible thing to get out. When that didn't work I would have had no choice but to wait for someone to discover that I was stuck.

That would have been scary for a young child. Glad you had kitty for company. :)

I wouldn't go in there either till the doorknob was fixed, or I'd leave the door open if I was by myself. One thing that scares me is getting locked in the bathroom at a public place, I'm always afraid I might not be able to get the door opened, its not like I wouldn't be able to crawl under the stall but who wants to do that on a dirty floor...haha.

My last house had a phone in the bathroom. I'm thinking now I need one installed in my next place I'm packing to move to.

I would have gone berserk for sure! I am very claustrophobic and can't stand enclosed places. I even have a hard time riding elevators. I don't like using bathrooms at gas stations, etc where there is only one toilet and you need to lock the door to do your business. I'm always in fear that I will get locked in! I probably would have tried to take the hinges off or kick a hole in the door (if it was a lightweight door). I would have been screaming like heck! I'm glad you got out. Best wishes!

I have a somewhat similar experience but in didn't involve any breaking down door knobs :) A few years ago, we went to Baguio (a cool place in the Philippines) for Christmas. We rented a house - and there's this superstition that many houses in that area are haunted. We didn't really care about any of that. So my sister and I were fixing up before we left for stroll - then when we were about to leave, we found ourselves locked in the bathroom. The locks were uncannily placed outside the bathroom because it was shared by two rooms - we didn't really panic but we found the situation strange since the door knob was in perfect working condition. A few minutes later, our mom comes looking for us and we told her we were locked in the bathroom. She opened it - barely twisting the door knob itself. She said it wasn't locked from her end. Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Hi Tess, I will be scared too and will not be comfortable. I will try my best to destroy or maybe if no choice, will just try to think positive while anyone will be home!

Ok, so you are a Blond! A very funny Post, to be sure! Did you hear the one about the blond who was driving along a country road and when she saw a man in a row-boat sitting in the center of a plowed field. She was curious, stopped the car, and hollered, "Hey out there in the field, why are you sitting in a Boat?" The man hollers back. "I'm going fishing, Wanna come?" "Yes,I would,"she replied, "But I can't swim!"

I'd beat the door down! lol No way would I go into a room and get locked in because I wouldn't hear of it!! lol I'd beat that door until it gave in because I'd be in panic mode by then. Now another idea is to take the pins out of the hinges so you could wedge it open to get out. However, if the pins are on the opposite side, I'd beat that door down! lol

I did check the hinges, but couldn't manage it. Besides, they had been painted over and all I had were a hairbrush and scissors. LOL

Not me. Im the type of person who will break down the door and worry about fixing it later. I have slight clostruphobia. I dont always get panicky in small places but it just depends.

It is really awful! I dislike to enter a room without some windows. I think a window is the eye of a room.

Sounds scary. yeah, perhaps even I'd have done what you did. I'd take a few deep breaths to calm my nerves and begin looking for a way out. I dont function all that well under anxiety. Again, when I'm alone I never lock any of my doors behind me for this very same reason of getting locked in! lol

Omg! Well I've been locked in my bedroom before because somthing was wrong with the handle and it broke off on the other side of the door. So someone just had to put it back in for it to open but no one could hear me banging so much! I know for sure I wouldn't be as scared as being locked in a room with no windows and no one is in the house for sure! :o But I would of just waited...Oh wait..the bathroom? CORR i would bash that thing soo much xD I would probably would of done what you did hehe. No one wants to be stuck in a bathroom all day xD

Wow!! This is not something I would want to have to experience. But at least you were stuck in your Bathroom so you could utilize that room as needed. But I am sure that it was not a Fun experience, and you are amxiously waiting to make sure this problem is resolved for sure.

TessWhite, First off, I'd say you do something for ventilation in that windowless bathroom of yours i.e. exhaust fan, install a grove window with curtain, windowless bathrooms are very dangerous and unhealthy. You are fortunate that the lights did not give up on you on this occasion and just could not imagine what it would have been for you if it did. So, I hope that you will consider it for your health and life sake. As for that doorknob of yours, I suggest that you decommission it totally and install a simple bolt over it since it is your own house here. Bolts simple as it is, is certainly more reliable and secure enough for a moment of privacy. Besides, they are much cheaper, easier to maintain and unbeknown to you much more durable than a doorknob . I think the only time where I was locked in, was when the escalator in the office building broke down due to a power failure in the city whilst on the last day of my business trip. I was supposed to go straight to the airport for my flight to another meeting in another country. Amidst of the panic and worry as to whether my rescue would be in time for me to reach to the airport and catch my flight, I had to endure the discomfort of a pitch black and half crowded escalator. Help did came eventually an hour later and that 1 hour was like 10 hours. It is certainly not an experience I would fancy for a repeat. Cheers.

No, I'm not doing repairs to this place. I've just sold it -"as is." The new owners will have to deal with all the repairs this old place needs. I'm so glad to be moving to my new home this next month! Thanks for the response.

TessWhite, Congratulations! Happy to know that you will have a new place soon, however, I hope that you would not have any windowless room there. Anyway, take care and have a nice day. Let us know or maybe even post some pictures of your new place here. Cheers.
