for me it was whebn i couldn't stop thinking about him, and missing him when he was not around.

It is kind of feeling and it can be felt and realised only, it is difficult to translate the feeling in words, those who are in love can only feel it. Are you feeling that you are getting attracted or attached to someone and you are drawing close to him/her?

I'm assuming you're asking the difference between love and lust, which by definition are close but mean two different things. People are different and it varies by each person. Some people can fall in love AND know it within a few weeks (some people disagree and think you can't possibly love someone this soon but its all opinions) and some people it can take several months especially if you have trust issues or just simply have trouble finding someone that you're compatible with. The one thing you have to remember that took me forever to learn: you can't look for love! It has to find you. When you go looking for love, you usually trick yourself into thinking you love someone. I have been with several guys that I THOUGHT I loved but when I look back at it, I've only been in love 3 times. A lot of people say that when you are in love, you will know it.... which is still sometimes hard to tell the difference between love and lust. You just can't sit there and ponder on the question though.... it will drive you crazy and the worst thing you could do is be in love, and ponder on it so much that you doubt yourself
