Does anyone know about car transmissions?

Hi guys I have an intrepid 96' I got it from a friend for free and am trying to get it to work, the car did not even start but finally I got it to turn on the problem now is the gears, when I get it into gear (automatic) it starts going however when it is time to change gears what ever is it from 1-2 or 2-3 or 3-4 I have to rev up a lot in order for the car to get into gear, I get scan error codes of 41 and 42 but don't really know how to go from here, does anyone know what could be wrong and how to fix it?
