why people text all the time, while they can chat on the phone

Text message is getting popular among many cell phone users; Especially teens. If you are in a conference, or a speech, it is understandable that you rather use text to communicate rather than talk on the phone to interrupt the session. I just don't understand, why people rather text each other rather than talk on the phone. What is the mentality here?

WEll I like to text when I am at home or I am busy that way I really do not have to hold the phone that much. I feel texting is more praviate as well in terms of people around you and so forth. Now one thing about texting that I do not like is the fact be careful what you say because texts can be saved too and a phone conversation cannot be. I guess it depends on the person and what they are doing as to wether they text or talk. TAke care and happy mylotting to you.

I text a lot. Sometimes the privacy comes into it but usually its just that when I phone someone for something small, it always seems live a pointless call but asking it through texts is completely fine, due to the shortness of them.

Like others have mentioned here, its mainly useful when you r not so sure about the other person, whether he is busy or not. Another thing is that text messages are cheaper, especially where you have the so called boosters which give you virtually unlimited messages for a small amount.
Atleast in India, normally people text when the matter is nothing great (just casual). Incase of emergency and important issue they ring up (if they have balance, which students seldom have).
Well, I am not a great fan of text chatting and normally i dont use it that much.
It comes in handy for me when I cant reach the other person.

If calls are unlimited and low rates then teens will not use texting anymore.

For some it could be a cost issue, depending on the type of calling plan you may have in place-if you have free text messages, and a concise message to deliver, texting usually fits the bill..Texting can cut out the "unnecessary" social interaction or intrusion of a phone call, too,or enable you to share a joke with many friends by autosending multiples of an original,or send an intimate note to a loved one that no-one can overhear..I look on texting as an addition to phone calls, not an alternative! We love to communicate, and more ways to do so is a good thing..

I think the main reason is because text messaging is much cheaper compare to calling rate. And its just to easy to just compose text messaging then that message can be send to different person in just one sending. Unlike if we call we can only send the message in one person. Texting is mainly for cost conscious and creative texter.

Because in text, you can send a gm(group message) to other people who are involve. rather than on the phone, you can only talk to one person. Groups are popular these days, that's why text is more reliable than calls.
And, people put time limit on phone calls since they might receive a call.

Everybody uses the reason of cheapness but I think some people use text messages rather than talking on the phone because they are shy.Another reason is that a message can be a lot more meaningful than a simple call to say "Hello!"

I think that texting is just a trend. Teenagers are a fan of it, in my opinion because they think that it is cooler and it is easier for them to communicate through symbols and abbreviations rather than having a conversation with another person. I will admit though, text messaging is an added convenience because you are able to relay information quicker and more efficiently and if you forget something you can always check your inbox on your phone. Personally, that is just my opinion and I am pretty sure that others have different views, depending on if they text or not.

I like to text more then talk on the phone because of the delay. Texting allows me to think about what I want to say without the pressure of an instant reply. Plus, some people (like myself) are better able to express their thoughts through writing better than talking.

Well first off, calling especially in public places is pretty inconvenient in a sense that you have to find a place where there is less noise and you have you be wary of snatchers or holduppers. Texting on the other hand, takes less time to send the message across. Plus, texting is cheaper than making calls.

I guess there a quite a few reasons to text rather than call someone directly. I guess the main reason is because you might suspect that the other person is busy and so you can avoid disturbing them by sending a text rather than calling them. In addition, sometimes I think people text for fun rather than anything else. Sending jokes or forwarding messages via text has become very common practice for many people. Also, sometimes it is easier to say something via text rather than having a 'real' conversation - it is a bit of a chickens way out, but perhaps quite a few people are much more comfortable to send a message electronically that they might not wish to actually speak about.
