Do you buy foods from stalls/carts?

I used to enjoy buying foods from stalls in the streets of Taiwan years ago. They sell variety of goodies that looked so yummy! When I was in the Philippines I saw a stall in Manila selling turon (banana in sweet crunchy wraps). I wanted one so I asked my brother to buy one for me but he went "No, they're dirty!". Is this true? How are these stalls allowed all over the city if they are selling dirty foods? Does this have something to do with air pollution or the uncertainty of vendors' cleanliness? Probably both? But I saw some people didn't mind at all and did buy from them! I was so jealous! lol How about you? Do you like buying foods from stalls? I used to love buying fish balls with that sweet sauce dip. Man I miss that! I guess most people in Manila prefer the mall's food court huh?

i guess, it depend on people how to view clean foods to dirty foods. but in our office, we usually buy food that they sell in cart rather than those available in foodcourt. coz its a lot cheaper there. it is almost half the price that the one they sell inside the mall but still taste the same or even better.. i like to buy taho from manong rather the cold taho they sell inside the building. i also like fishballs, chicken balls and kwek kwek or quail eggs. theyre very delicious and cheaper too!

food that they sell in carts? jolli-carts? lol.. that's what they call those in makati.. those with pepsi stalls i think selling carinderia-foods.. hehe but yeah i buy those street foods.. i think fish balls is the only food which price never changed.. it's still 0.50c a pc! lol.. and yes, it would depend actually on one's immune system.. since we inhabitants are so used to eating them, our immune system works perfectly fine and on the other hand, if you're so used to eating "clean" foods, one bite of a street fishball and you'll be puking all your guts out.. so that's why, sometimes we needs some "dirt" in our system to boost our immunity.. lol!

Hi gicolet good day to you mylotter, well honestly speaking i always buy some foods from stalls/carts because the food that they were selling is very affodable to all people especially those poor like me. I think not all stalls/carts are dirty food because i know some of stalls/carts that are clean and i always go to buy food from that stalls/carts. In my own i think, most of the people know that some of the foods that were selling in streets are dirty, but that is only fine for them because of due to crisis and the financial needs nowadays, they want to eat any kinds of food just to survive. We all know that most of the Filipino are food lover and they really want to eat any kinds of food that is new to there eye, so i can say that i am also same with them, because i am a Filipino. Imagine why most the Filipino loves to eat street foods? Like fishball, eggball, squidball, kalamares, kikyam, nugget, hotdog, and etc, because we are Filipino because even though it is bad to our health we still love it for the reason it is very affordabld, so i can say yot can not blame them with that and you have nothing to do with them because they have there own choice in life. I have a simple advice to you, why don't you try to eat some street foods in street, i am sure you will also love it and by the way, as i remember my teacher told me that sometimes people need bad bacteria in the body in order to balance the health ecosystem of the body. So if i were you, just try and taste it,and give trust to those seller of foods from the stalls and carts. Well that's all my response to your forum topic discussion entitled [b] "do you buy foods from stalls/ carts?". I am hoping that i give a very interesting response to your beautiful discussion. Happy posting and happy earning. . . Good luck to our career here in this site mylot. Thank you and Mabuhay! God bless us always!

Oh i've already tried buying foods from stalls when I was still in Taiwan. I love eating street foods. Nothing beats the ones in Taiwan. They're all over the night markets there. I just haven't tried buying street foods in Manila. Thanks.

Great discussion. I will NEVER eat from a cart! I will tell you why! 8 years ago I would swear by the carts. Every night when I went downtown I would get a hotdog off of the cart! I loved the italian sausages. Never again. I decided to go to work on the carts! Boy was I surprised! I worked on the carts for 5 years! And the stuff I didnt see! Dont read if you dont want to give up the carts! Or have a weak stomach! 1. Venders are not screaned for diseases 2. Venders are not clean! 3. There is no place to wash your hands on the carts 4. Venders rarely wear gloves Here is how the carts work You take the hotdogs from a deepfreeze packed from the store You boil them in hot water on the cart. Then they are cooked on the bbq! At the end of the night the dogs that arnt sold that were in the water or on teh bbq are put in big baggies and put in the deep freeze to be recooked and sold the next night! Yucky! The warehouses that the food is kept in is far from clean! I know of a couple that actually has *** on top of a cart! I could go on but dont want to make anyone throw up! So in conclusion I would not recomend eating off a cart unless you wana get sick!

Oh gosh what you said is true. Cart vendors were featured on tv under hidden camera and found out that they touched their noses, butts, and then wipe their sweat and did not wash their hands before touching the foods again. It was disgusting.

I like to buying some foods from stalls, there is no problem with pollution, because realize or not realize every day when we walk on the street we get the pollution, even if we do not eat food from stall, we still get the pollution. For Cleanliness problem, i think it is true, some vendor in the street don't care about their cleanliness, because there is no fresh water there to keep cleaning their hand or any else.

That's true we still get germs and stuff somewhere else one way or another even we don't buy from these food stalls. Because the foods look so yummy we tend to forget or ignore the fact that these vendors do not really have a way to wash their hands with anti bacterial soap before they touch the foods again. They don't even wear gloves so everything is all up to the buyers.

I also used to enjoy buying street foods (foods that can be bought from food carts/stalls in the streets), but one time I got sick because of it (typhoid). So right now I'm refraining from buying street foods, even though they look so yummy and delicious - they are!

lol...as they said people in Philippines have a very strong stomach. They get immune with street foods. Anyway kidding aside not all street foods are dirty. Your brother is just preventive which is quite alright. Now you can tell yourself when the street food is dirty or not, you can observe if how they prepare it or you can tell yourself if your stomach is sensitive. Personally i love street foods and whenever i go out outside, me and my friends love to eat whenever we see one but for me i always choose the stalls that i believe and see that is clean and that's where i bought. I really don't know but sometimes my taste buds really look for that certain taste that i can only find on street foods. Another thing is that most of the street foods are also available in malls now, the only difference is in malls it is much higher cost. Well i can see that you love to try turon, you can make it yourself at home. It is very easy to make. One thing i love to try is this street food on a stick but i don't know the name, its a street food in korea that i saw in tv. I would love also to try the street foods in Japan. It looks delicious

a mango stall - various food carts are found in the Philippines
Well, I always buy food from stalls and I haven't had any illnesses yet. I don't think they're dirty at all. Some even cook these foods in front of their customers. I think your brother is just over-reacting. He should at least first try them out before jugding them.

Vendors are nice but you do have to be careful because some aren't kept as cleanly. Here in America there aren't many of these except for say at a fair, or at a parade possibly.

Hello gicolet! Yes, here in the Philippines there are so many stalls/cart selling in the street with different kinds of food.. Well, I think that's only the perspective of most people here in the Philippines that foods selling in the street are dirty because of the dust and the smoke coming from the vehicle. People were thinking that the vendors doesn't really care about the sense of cleanliness since they were selling it in the street, the dust and other kinds of germs will go to the food that they were selling.. When I was a kid, I love buying some food in the street especially in front of our school like Tempura and fish ball.. Sometimes even Ice Candy, or Juice.. But my father always told me of not buying foods in the street because its dirty.. Well, I seldom buy food in the street like toron, mango, tempura, squid ball, etc. but I chose the places and stalls where I'll buy food because I believe that here in Manila particularly most vendor doesn't value cleanliness in their foods.. The just keep on selling foods for the sake of earning money.. Most of the time, I bought those things in the mall because its more safe than in the street but if I'm in our Province I can just buy food in the street because vendors in the provinces are more honest than here in the City..

sure I did before, when I was in the Philippines am so fond of eating gizzard barbeque sold in stalls along the streets. They tastes so yummy and crispy. I rarely have a day w/o them. Well I don't think there are street foods like those her ein the USA tho. But in fairness and cleanlinesswise, I don't think they are safe to eat.

I used to love "street foods" (that's what we call them here in the Philippines). Even when I was in gradeschool - however, I then ended up getting really sick and I had to be confined because of extreme diarrhea. I stopped eating street foods then. I'd just watch my sister enjoy hers because she has a far stronger stomach than me. Or I ask our helper to cook some for me :D Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Yeah, most of the street foods aren't well, that clean. But you should consider the stall's immediate surroundings, if it's not that unhygienic, you probably should go ahead and give it a try.

I think it's the air pollution from the jeepneys that does it. Who wouldn't prefer cleaner foods right? Thanks for posting.

I know the street carts are a lot different in Asia but nothing beats the street carts in New York. You got your famous dirty dogs, gyros, kebobs, canidied nuts ect.. Even though you will feel it the next day it is sooo worth it. Any New Yorkers out there?

I do buy street foods at times when it is really needed. From work when you are very hungry this is the cheapest food you can buy to satisfy your hunger for the meantime. But it is not advisable to always buy from them, these might cause some diseases that you might get from this.

hi, yes, I do but in street stalls. Foods like Fish ball, quail eggs, chicken balls, etc. Also, foods like turon, as you mentioned. You just have to choose a stall that looks dirty. Sometimes, the impression of those stall are really dirty because all types of people are buying and eating there. but nevertheless i still buy there.

I buy from both, the street carts vegetables are usually cheaper as they do not pay for the stall charges for the market. They are allowed to sell before eight in the morning, after which the street administrators will come to chase them away. The same with the various food for breakfast. People come and go buying and eating going to work by bike, or by bus. They are supplementing the service for ordinary people, though sometimes negatively affecting the street environment, they are a part of our needs

Hahaha.I am a huge fan of turon. I guess I will you why your brother said it was dirty, because when turon is cooked it is cooked outside not inside the house. So, air pollution contaminates the food. But, of course, no one can avoid the delicious treat. I don't mind eating, though I don't eat much. And yes, I like buying foods from stalls since they are much cheaper. And the food court, well sorta, but still nothing beats good old street foods.

in our office, if we don't have food for our lunch, we buy in those carts and we called them "jolly-jeep", they sell different foods everyday from breakfast, lunch, meryenda and sometimes even dinner. for breakfast we usually buy rice with hotdog and eggs. for lunch we buy, fried chicken, porkchop, veggies and others. for meryenda or afternoon snacks. my officemates usually buy turon, banana Q and sometimes fish balls and queck queck ( its quail egg covered with cornstarch powder with seasonings) and for just our little money we had fun eating our food.
