Do you donate to any charities?

I usually give to our local humane society, but this year since I'm not working we've had to cut back on a lot of things. Unfortunetly one of those things was donations and I'm feeling quite guilty about it.
Do you have any specific charities that you support?
if so, why that one?
Or do you just donate randomly if someone contacts you.
Or do you not donate at all?
and if not, why not?

I tend to donate clothes and things. The clothes are always in good condition, some have never even been worn. When my husband passed away some years ago I donated his things as well. I believe in helping out as much as I can even if it is only with little things. Once i even donated croched blankets that i had made.

we get flyers from the march of dimes every once in a while when they are going to be in our neighborhood picking up donations. With 2 teenage girls there is almost always clothes that we can donate to them LOL. So yeah, It doesn't always have to be cash, anything a person can give helps. Maybe I'll clean out the closets soon and donate what I can. Good idea on the blankets too, I never would have thought of that.

I always donate my old clothes to the orphanage or to the rural areas. My parents have the tradition of donating food (rice, canned goods) to the infortunate families in our area every new year's day. We go to the different areas to distribute these packed goods to them without expecting any rewards in return.

holidays are always a good time to give. my father in law used to go to the hospital (where he was a patient one christmas) every year without fail on christmas eve and bring the patients candy. maybe it wasn't something they needed, but it sure did a lot to cheer them up.

My fiance and I have "adopted" a group of elderly women in Kyrgisistan and we send them money every month. Many people choose to sponsor a child in the third world and we had also talked about that, but we decided to sponsor the elderly women instead. The elderly women or people in Kyrgisistan don't get a lot of attention in the news, but they really need money. The money that we donate is spent on medicine and other daily necessities. We have talked about visiting Kirgisistan some time in the future, it is not easy to get a visa, but we don't worry about that yet, because we would need to save up some money before we could go there.
