When i was working it was always in an airconditioned office. Working under such cool and controlled conditions was a great relief and a pleasure since it was hot outside. At home i never have had an airconditioner and relied on the ceiling and table fan to keep me cool although at the height of summer it is inadequate. Now that i am permanently at home since i am retired i cannot afford to have an airconditioner since the electricity bills will shoot up and in these days of global economical downturn it would be foolish to avail of these luxuries. So no a/c for me.

I really don't like sleeping in an aircon room. I would prefer the ceiling fan. Aircon is too cold and I need a warm room with fresh air. I would open up the window and let the fresh air come in. I sleep better that way. Aircon is very drying to the skin besides it consume a lot of electricity.

In my case not really I am not opening my windows when its turned off and I am sleeping deeply when the times the aircon is switched off. My aircon just happen to have an automatic timer and I just adjust it to number of hours then leave it at that and enjoy my sleeping for at least a few hours of cold air.

the ac which i have here is also automatic.it is true that for some time i donot feel hot but after some time,my sleep gets disturbed and i find it necessry to open the windows.

The timer is an awesome function - prevents you from oversleeping since you will wake up earlier when your body feels uncomfortable when cooped up in the heat lol.

i do agree timer is good but that reason ..........well...........maybe in a sense it is good as i tend to oversleep in the mornings as the weather becomes slightly cool(timer or not)

HI! Riya! Yes, it is troublesome to open the windows in the middle of the night, but I think if you continue to run the AC, it will increase your electricity bill, either pay the hefty electricity bill or bear the hassle of getting awake in the middle of the night..............LOL! When the heat is very much, I would advice you to run your AC, so that you can get a good sound sleep, after all health and sleep is important than money, this is my view and when we are required to run AC in summers in Delhi, I run it continuously and do not bother about the bill..............LOL! After all AC is for our comfort.

lol but deepak, money doesnt grow on trees and i think (by early mornings, the atmosphere does become a bit cool)it is a wastage of money if i keep the ac on during that time.moreover i am coldblooded,i feel cold very fast ,then i start to shiver, naturally my sleep is affected!!!

Hi riyasam, No, I don't think using aircon is a hassle. How tedious is it to open and close windows? I am presuming that you are talking about the aircon unit in your own room. If your unit is only one and located in the common area such as the living room, then of course, yes, you need to close many windows. But normally people have units in each room or none at all (unless it is the mobile kind that is more like a colder fan). If you have just 1 in the living room and you want it to power up enough to chill all the rooms, geez, I imagine it is one sure way to kill the unit prematurely - not to mention your electricity bill will go up real high. So if it is just one room... then it is just one set of windows. I do that every night.

hi,lord(your user id is too long to spell),i am talking about the unit in my room.i have to get up twice.first i have to close the windows to put the ac on and then after some time i have to get up to open the windows and when i feel like putting on the ac again, again i have to close the windows and the cycle continues(its better to have kids, they donot give so much of sleeplessness)

Some here call me lww too and it took me a while to realize that was the initials for my moniker lol. Anyway why do you want to get up when you are supposed to be sleeping? If it is because it gets too cold, then raise the starting temperature. Or lower it if you find it gets hot. Normally we will just on the aircon through the whole sleeping period or not at all... If a fan works for you, use the fan. I do alternating too to save electricity. Natural air is better besides.

I think it is more of a hassle for the fact we have to take ours out in the winter and then turn around and put them back in in the summer. And also for the reasons you have mentioned. In the summer my boyfriend runs ours constantly upstairs. It doesn't raise our electric bill too much at least I don't think so compared to what we pay in the winter time for heat. It is still a big break for us. But I do think they are a hassle and would rather just be hot

Well I consider A/C is the only answer to the stifling heat of the summer.I don't mind closing and opening the doors though it is a hassle.I m prepared to do anything t beat the heat and the sweat.I was brought up in the central province of SriLanka in the cool Hills. It is a sea change for me as I migrated to India.Though hit was a long time back I am still finding it hard to cope up with the heat.Mayt be cool memories are still intact.

The air conditioner is most effective if left on all the time. That way the room doesn't have the chance to heat up again. It is supposed to be more expensive to run it part time then full time. I have a hard time in the heat, but am working hard not to turn the air on until much later in the season. Right now it cools off nice at night so I open the windows at night, turn the fans on, and then in the morning turn the fans off and close the windows. It too is a lot work, but much cheaper then the air conditioner.

Okay...here is how it works. The air conditioner or the heater has to warm up or cool down everything in a room to get it to the desired temperature. This includes people, pets, and even more importantly all the furniture and appliances in the room. To do this it works harder then it does to maintain that temperature. Therefore it cost more to make the air conditioner work hard to cool it down every night then it would to maintain it all the time. There are only two times this isn't true. 1) if your air conditioner is old and has a hard time keeping the room cool. 2) If the temperature in the room doesn't get cooled down that much when you turn the air on. It is best to try and live with the heat as long as possible and then to bottle up all the air inside and keep it cool. Then the air conditioner isn't working so hard to get it cool inside, but rather is just working a little to keep it cool. It is also best if you set it at a higher temperature and just work at living with it that warm. For us that means about 78 degrees Fahrenheit. It is still warm, but still lots cooler then the 100-115 degrees it gets outside in the hottest part of summer.

Hi riyasam Yes it's getting really hot these days especially here in my country But I don't turn on my AC, I use my fan. I don't feel good sleeping with the AC turned on lol... But I do open my windows a bit before I turn in to let in fresh air at night... ^_^ maybe you can use a fan to lessen your electric bills and you don't need to get up in the middle of the night to open the windows since you can leave them open when you get to bed

thats a good ida you have given,my windows are covered with mosquito nets as mosquitoes are a problem in my place,so you can say the windows are only partially open and the heat is too much that the fans give no effect.

awww. sorry about that... but it's good that you nets to keep out mosquitoes. I don't have the same problem with the insects here so I can open the windows even without the nettings ^_^... hmmm... fans have no eefect from heat over there (thinking)... so the best thing you can use to battle heat is the AC huh? ... it's too bad you can't open the window even partially while the AC is running cuz that will only increase your Electric consumption...

I do not consider using the A/C a hassle. I consider the A/C a godsend, in summer time that is, I love the furnace in winter time. Anyways. Have you considered getting a solar panel or two to help with your electricity? Then you could leave it on a lower temperature for a longer time at night, with out having to worry about your electricity bill. I do not know what they cost where you are from, I know they are fairly expensive here in Canada, but I also feel that the price to get it installed gets paid back substantially in saved electricity costs.

They don't seem to be commonly used anywhere that I have noticed. But what better way to power the thing that saves us from the heat of the sun then with the sun itself?? This is my thought! And don't forget, 1 degree Celsius change on your thermostat can save you 2% on your energy bill. Or so my Power bill told me last month.

When I was living in the plains I used to find it a hassle like you.I used to set the timer and when its cold enough it used to be put off.At times it remains cool till you wake up but at times its better to open out the windows.Thankfully now I live in a hill station and its bliss here.No fans no air conditioners and no mosquitoes. Now when I have to go down to the plains I find it very uncomfortable. While everyone is complaining about the heat and power cuts here we need to use a thin quilt to cover up.

I open and close the windows two times a day as it anyway when it is hot or cool it is not problem. When it is warm outside during the day but to cool at night to keep the windows opened they are opened during the day and closed at night. When it is summer they are opened at night and closed once it gets hot outside to help keep it cool in the house. I start at one end of the house and go from room to room opening the windows. It takes me about 5 minutes and yes at times it can be a hassel but in the long run it save electricity.

Using air conditions is not a hastle for me.I don't have an air condition in my house.Because of the heat in the surrounding i will prefer to keep the ac on in afternoon and in the nights. We can buy acs with five star that will save most of the bill.We can keep the ac temperature twenty five so that it will cool the room and the bill will not cost much.

I don't feel that using an air conditioner is a hassle I'm grateful to have one, growing up we didn't have such a thing in our house and it was always so hot especially at night, I felt like I couldn't breathe. Now I don't like having to close the windows and doors, because it makes me feel like I'm all closed in, but I deal with it, at least I'm able to stay cool. I do try to go as long as I can during the morning hours before I have to turn it on...haha.
