I thought I would just pass this along for those who are unsure about their computer's security. I read an article yesterday about the computer virus Conficker C, which reportedly will begin wreaking havoc on April Fool's Day. I learned that the virus first appeared in late 2008, but has now become much more virulent and will have the ability to destroy your computer if it becomes infected:http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2009/03/confickerc-primed-for-april-fools-activation.ars. So, be careful out there all of you! I have been busy checking out my personal security features to make sure that my computer will not make for an easy target.

The proper things to do are to:
1) Download the appropriate patch for Windows from Microsoft. If you are running XP, make sure that you have SP2 or later.
2) Install and run a proprietary anti-virus program. If you don't have one already, make sure that you do. If you do, make sure its up to date by doing a manual update. Run a full scan.
Wikipedia says this ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conficker )
"On 15 October 2008 Microsoft released a patch (MS08-067) to fix the vulnerability. Removal tools are available from Microsoft, BitDefender, ESET, Symantec, Sophos, and Kaspersky Lab, while McAfee and AVG can remove it with an on-demand scan. While Microsoft has released patches for the later Windows XP Service Packs 2 and 3 and Windows 2000 SP4 and Vista, it has not released any patch for Windows XP Service Pack 1 or earlier versions (excluding Windows 2000 SP4), as the support period for these service packs has expired. Since the virus can spread via USB drives that trigger AutoRun, disabling the AutoRun feature for external media (through modifying the Windows Registry) is recommended. However the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team describe Microsoft's guidelines on disabling Autorun as being "not fully effective," and they provide their own guides. Microsoft has released a removal guide for the worm via the Microsoft website.
Also, on March 16, 2009, BitDefender released an updated tool to remove the already famous Downadup/Conficker worm on a new domain that has not been blocked by the malicious computer code at a website called "bdtools.net"."

Thanks. I should have added ... Disable Autorun on USB Memory Sticks, if you are accustomed to using them in different PCs. This is, apparently, the way that Conficker is most often carried from one system to another.

I learned the hard way, hotsummer, to avoid sites that cannot be trusted, so your idea is a smart one.

Yes, kissieme, I think that even with the reliable protection that I have I will still limit my time on the Internet for that time period.

If you already have a good anti virus program on your computer, ag, that should be sufficient - along with a good anti spyware program.

This must be the new virus that my mil tried to tell me about yesterday. My computer installs all of the new patches and updates from Microsoft every evening so I know that it done. We had a free virus protection installed also ,but I am not sure if it is still current or not. I guess I will check. Thanks for sharing this information.

This is very dangerous virus. The first version of this virus affected millions of networks all over the world. Check this out http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/128643/beware-conficker-worm-come-april-1/ We should be vigilant about protecting our PCs/Servers: download and install all the patches through windows update, download latest virus definitions for antivirus software.

Your link, mdalia, is where I first read about it, and I am confident that I have all of the necessary updates. The amount of attention Conficker C is getting speaks to how dangerous it can be.
