Have you ever stopped writing?

For the last few years, I found myself not writing hardly at all. Which to me was a bit strange since I have always been a prolific poet. Even during my high school years when I was so depressed that I was suicidal. And its not like I didn't have anything to write about, I was married to a bipolar man so he gave me plenty to work with. It was just like I was so burnt out emotionally that I couldn't write. Now that he is gone (he walked out on me in November and then filed for divorce), the writing is starting to come back. So has this ever happened to you, you find yourself blocked because you can't breathe emotionally?

Yes, sometimes I find that writers block comes more readily when I feel real unsure of myself. I think that I have to have a certain amount of passion about a subject and feel like what I have to say is important. It is almost like a mission for me.

Makes sense. I think I felt unsure of us and therefore me and that is why I remained bottled up emotionally, its almost like a wall coming down for me.

You sound alot like me. I too, wrote in high school. That was one of the few things that kept my sanity in check. There were times I could write 10 or so poems in a given day. Then, there were times I could write little more than my name without extreme effort. Like you stated, there was an emotional block. In so many ways writing has broken down those emotional walls. In a sense, I could not write or do much else because of those blocks. When I could focus, that's when I would write. That's when I realized what the real problems were. The emotional blocks eventually encouraged my writing which lead to my solving those issues, or at least their becoming less complicated. It seems that when we write poetry or short stories, there is often more to the story than people can see. Sometimes, its so hard to write because the thoughts and feelings are there, but when its time to let it out, there seems to be something that refuses to let me start to find peace. Each person is different, so I can only speak for me on that note. Sometimes writing about what seems like nothing at all or what seems to be the most troublesome times in your life can bring on the inspiration and encouragement that you have been waiting on for so long.

Take a pause, yes I mean a real pause, think, see, hear and feel - there is plenty to move you and give that urge to write. All that you, others and me require is to take a pause!

I am doing a lot of that these days. Lot of observing and thinking. Its nice to have some down time especially if it comes on the heels of a bad situation.

There have been times when I haven't written anything because i just wasn't inspired to write anything or I just went through a period of writer's block. Though I tend to agree with you when I am depressed and upset I seem to be able to write better poetry than I do when I am not so depressed.

It does seem the tortured poet has an easier time writing doesn't it.

I always took interest in writing and have written a few original poems as well, though they are not that good. I am an avid blogger and I have maintained my blog for over three years now. some days you are not in a mood to write and some days you are. So, I think the same goes with writing. Personally, when I am down and out, I have been betrayed by people or something bad has happened to me, then I feel like writing.

Happens sometimes for me. Sometimes I feel i need to say a lot but I feel blank when I try to put it in words. I guess stress can be a factor which in habits from putting us an idea coherently in words. But I have always enjoyed writing. Earlier it used to be a pen and paper nowadays it's obviously the keyboard.

I still use a pen and paper--and then transfer it to the computer. I just like the motion of actually writing it out.

I don't think that I have ever been in a situation like yours, but it's too bad that you couldn't use writing as an outlet. Sometimes life overwhelms us, and it's all we can do to just make it through the day. Mostly, I find writing is either an escape from reality or a way to make a comment about life as I've experienced it. I guess the escape part comes mostly when I am working on my short stories. Most of the time, I write nonfiction. I hope that you are now able to go back and enjoy writing again. Good luck!

I tend to burn out, after awhile. Especially if I write as obsessively as I have the tendency to do. My appitude is novels, though, so it's easier for me to burn out than I'd suppose it might be for a poet (another reason for me to envy poets!). Sometimes, it's not just inspirationally burnt out, but I'll just feel drained in general about life. Sudden energy drains, negative or frustrating people rarely turn the "off" switch, but on a rare occasion... It does happen to me. I hate it when it happens, most of the time. It's the most intense stuck feeling I know.

I agree. I feel stuck, drained and wrong. It was a horrible feeling. I hope I can get back to writing now.

I sometimes go through slumps in my writing. I've been doing a lot of article writing, which is "nice" but haven't touched my fictional writing in ages. Funny, when I was at my most emotionally burnt out due to all the problems my mother created in my life while she was alive, that's when I wrote the MOST fiction...I guess as an escape??

I think so. I think for me it was an emotional release. I wrote the most during my angst High School years.
