Do you know anyone that has a bad habit of chewing up plastic objects all the time? My husband has a habit of chewing up plastic drinking straws, and the protective plastic ring that is connected to the top that you twist open right after you purchase a coke or beverage. He only does this with plastic, and he chews and chews until the object is unrecognizable he DOES NOT swallow the plastic he only chews it up really bad.. LOL.. it sounds funny but it is true.... I have watched him do this for about eight years straight could he be addicted to the way plastic tastes or something?, has anybody else experienced someone doing this?

I have been chewing on plastic for as long as i can remember.. i mostly just chew on pen caps, the rings off plastic bottles, straws, ect.. It seems really gross but it really isnt.. i do it when im anxious or bored.. i dont even notice im doing it anymore.. i watched my mom do it with pen caps when i was young and im not sure if i picked it up from her or not.. Plastic does not have a taste. for me its the feeling of chewing on it and i know many people will say "why not chew gum?" well i do chew gum sometimes, but plastic just has a different feeling i guess you could say its "harder" to chew. it really makes no sense and i feel like a crazy person reading what i wrote but it is what it is.. some people smoke some people drink some people chew nails or play with their hair or whatever i chew plastic and i dont know what your husbands reason is for it but its probably nothing you should worry about as far as addiction but it is really bad for your teeth.. im really young and ive had problems with my teeth already.. i have extrememly sensitive teeth! well i hope this helps you feel better that your husband isnt the only one.. sure makes me feel better knowing im not the only person lol!

I hope he isn't damaging his teeth. And I suspect that some if not all plastics would release some chemical while being chewed, though I have no idea how to prove that.
There is a condition named "pica" that makes people eat unusual substances like dirt or paper, but since he just chews on them and not actually eats, I don't know if that really applies.
One theory is that his current diet is deficient in a certain nutrient. I would recommend a doctor for better information.

Everyone has their own habit. Like chewing the plastic or bit his/her fingernail. I think it's a normal thing but if you want your husband to stop it. You must slowly and step by step to make him stopt his kind of habit. Maybe like to tell him, the negative effect or maybe change with the chew gum. So he can forget and has another focus beside chewing the plastic.
I addict to pull my curly hair when I sitting and don't do anything. It like a habit and also I don't recognize until I put my hair and feel the pain. Beside that I have a bad habit like shaking my feet at anywhere. I try to stop it but it doesn't work.
So, I think your husband addicted to chew the plastic is also hard to stop it. Keep try and wish you succes to stop it.
Keep post
happy myLotting...

Plastic is harmful. But you said that he is not swallowing it so i think there is danger with this but it seems some thing different when some body notices it. Ask your husband to chew chewing gums instead of plastic.

Thanks saichandtalluri
for your response, my husband LOVES to chew gum...but he chews it so loudly that I can't stand it.One day he had a bag full of gum in the car while we were riding along he was chewing so loudly that I threw all the gum out the window LOL....LOL I love my husband dearly, but I could not take the loud smacking any longer so I threw the gum out the window of the car... LoL, but now that I am reading all the responses about how harmful his chewing plastic could be...I would rather listen to him chew his gum any day, than for him to possibly make himself sick due to chewing plastic. I love my husband, and I want him to be around for a long time:)

I have the same problem as your husband.. I chew plasic all the time.. and the same types.. i chew pen caps, plastic rings of pop bottles, straws, ect. it has nothing to do with the taste, its basically just like chewing fingernails its something to do.. i do it most when im bored. i have been doing it so long i dont realize im doing it anymore. it is extremely bad for your teeth and im aware of this but a habit is a habit.. millions of people smoke and they know its bad for them but they continue to do it. but its really nothing to worry about i dont think.. like i said before its usually just something to pass the time when im bored. hope this helps:) and im happy to let you know ur husband isnt the only one:)

My 15 yr old son does the same thing! Mainly the plastic rings on soda bottles, milk jugs, but sometimes even lids to ink pens. He has had this habit for a long time now, he doesn't swallow them, but it drives me crazy because I worry about him choking or wonder what can happen considering chemicals that are in plastics... His physical therapist suggested keeping candies that he can chew on hand, but he still does it... Thanks for posting this discussion. :)

I don't know of anyone who has that habit, but I responded to this discussion because it's fascinating to note that such exists, and your husband! He would be a good additional to the technology on plastic recycling or something, he, he, he. Kidding aside, you have to check whether plastics that are chewed can be hazardous even when not ingested....chemicals on it could cause sickness or salmonella, heard about it? That's why such habit is unsanitary, if not gross. Imagine, for eight long years. Something has to be done to stop this habit...

Hi there. Well, I usually nibble on my straws unconsciously, especially when I'm nervous or anxious about something. It has become something of an annoying habit but I'm a fidgety sort of person and my restlessness tends to manifest through certain actions such as chewing on my drinking straws. I've been called on it by my Mom since I was a kid but I don't think I've quite gotten over it. It may be quite weird from other people's point of view but it provides a much-needed diversion for me at times. It's really more of a psychological thing, I guess.

well, mickey
your husband might just be bored if he doesn't get any work to do around the house or something, mabye you should go to the supermarket with him and decide which gum he prefers the most, that should keep his jaws busy a while! I think that there is something about plastic that is very similar to chewing gums, mabye the gums aren't hard enoguh and your'e husband likes to go for something harder to chew on?
Although chewing gums might help cure this habitt.

May be its just his habit since before.the plastic is tasteless but his already addicted of chewing it. i had a friend also who have the same problem but its not a plastic she is chewing its her nail. even if she is already a teenagers she would not ashamed of doing it in front of others. she will chew and chew until she feels contented. she also said that she can't control of that bad habit. what will i do to help her where in fact she is the one cant help herself?
