Are you 'Fat'?

Australia
March 27, 2009 6:04am CST
When I quit smoking in May last year I did the usual thing that smokers do... replaced one hand to mouth habit with another... EATING. As a result I put on 20kg (45lb)and for the first time in my life I have those horrible folds of skin just above my waist. Since I was already 5kg overweight this means I am now around 57lb overweight. Unlike many people I don't think that being fat is ugly... not at all. In my eyes a fat person can be just as attractive as a skinny one But the fact remains that I don't like being fat... obviously not because I feel ugly because I don't. So why? The reason is that I feel uncomfortable, I bend down to tie my shoelaces and my darn belly gets in the way and I have to squish it to acheive the task which is uncomfortable... and those awful folds of skin!!!... they chafe and they sweat and I am constantly aware of them, they just don't feel nice. Not to mention the fact that my clothing is uncomfortably tight. So what about you? Are you 'fat'? How do you feel about it? Do you feel ugly or just uncomfortable like me? Julia

What is fat? To me it isn't what this says or that says, it is when you feel comfortable in your own skin, physically and mentally. They both are important for your over all well being. Myself according to what you read I am overwieght by about 30-45 pounds, depends on where you read, how tall you are, your bone structure etc. Myself I try to not go over 200lbs, the only time I have was when I was pregnant with my last child. Still I am close to that now and I don't like it for me. I don't fret over it, I just watch what I eat and how much. I have been hit by a depression and that doesn't help either so I keep my self conscious of what I eat and don't eat. I have had 5 surgeries in my lower abdomen which with a few they cut things that they shouldn't have, so now that muscle control isn't what it should be. What do I do about it? I accepted it and do what I can to loose and not let the over hang get to large for me. How I do this, is like some have said, water, drink it before you eat especially, whether a meal or a snack. You quit smoking, now you need to break that other habit of hand to mouth. If you are a snacker, try something I have been using for years now. I open like say oreo cookies take out say 4 or 5 sit the package down where you can't see it yet in reach of you. Eat the cookies and make your self wait before grabbing more. The first time I did this, I forgot the cookies were there, didn't find them by the chair until the next day. What this does is that you fulfill your craving without over indulging. Overall, one needs to get to where they are comfortable with themselves, Barbie isn't for me, still don't want to be to heavy that I can't carry my own weight. Take care of who you are all around, be Happy... God Bless you one and all

Thank you so much for an extremely well thought out response I have actually succeeded in breaking the hand to mouth habit now... but it took quite a while to do so. I'm snacking less and substituting healthy alternatives where I used to consume high sugar/fat content snacks. In the last couple of weeks I've noticed my clothing has become a little less tight but I stll have a fair way to go. Agree with you entirely that the important thing is that we be comfortable with ourselves... it's not up to other people to tell us what/how we should be.

Stick with what you feel is right for you and soon those clothes will just hang there like they belong to someone else. Loose until your comfortable with you.. Congrats on the better snacks and hand to mouth habit, I know its a hard one to break.. Good for you... I hope all works out for you.. set a goal with enough time to accomadate some mistakes on the way, this way you won't get on yourself so hard either.. Most of all Be Happy with You...

Hmmmm....I know I'm overweight - I've been working at losing weight (i've lost 14 pounds since christmas) But I dont actually consider myself to be "fat" Chunky yes, short and stocky...yes. Or as my aunt says We're alla bit "beefie" but not FAT. I guess it just has such a bad connotation to it to me that i've never thought of myself that way. I find though having lost 14 pounds I'm more inclined to do things and i FEEL better. I know theres certain things i cant do...or fit into...but I'm working at it. As an example - if i was smaller my friend Solstice ( a car) would be ALOT more comfy to sit in ...or the backseat of a car would be more comfy to sit in with others if i was smaller but..I'm working on it!.

Hi there. While I don't really consider myself 'fat', I do love eating and, thus, actually have a belly the size of which isn't really proportional to the rest of my body. Which is why I can relate to feeling uncomfortable - and the feeling of squishing my belly whenever I sit or bend over. So yes, if ever I have any complaint about being 'fat', I'd say it's because it is uncomfortable and impractical (seriously, I have to struggle to fit into clothes I bought a year ago), rather than making me feel that I'm ugly.

Good to hear that you don't buy into the ridiculous attitudes of society that fat=ugly... don't let anybody tell you that you should lose weight. Only ever go on a diet if you WANT to.

It's funny. My doctors seem to think I'm fine, but I've struggled with an eating disorder since I was 18 so I tend to be really hard on myself. If I took just my weight and height, I'd be considered obese. However, If I do skin folds I'm between normal and overweight. I have a lovely pouch from having six children that just hangs. Hence, a lot of my "excess" as you have is in my belly and I hate that it gets in the way. It's the one part of me I would love to save up for plastic surgery and have taken off. I do have a large bossom and I wouldn't give them up lol. I happen to like them, the are the asset. It is frustrating though because people have set thoughts about what is considered "attractive" and I really think that's half to blame for people developing eating disorders. So, I just do the best I can each day. I focus on my martial arts training and exercise, and meditation. I try to eat healthy, but don't beat myself if I do slip and indulge. In my case, I have to hold myself accountable to eat and stop the thoughts that say the opposite. Good luck to your weight loss. Namaste-Anora

Namaste Anora I agree that it's frustrating with the attitudes of society to being overweight. Where the heck did the averages for height and weight come from anyway... was is simply what looked good? And of course it depends entirely on where you are from too. I have a South African friend who is considered obese here in Australia... but by South African standards she is a 'healthy' weight. I know what you mean about the bosom too... any increase there is welcome to me since I'm small in that department... that's the one thing I'd be sorry to see go! I guess as long as our weight is not causing physical or health issues then it's really not important

I think I'm a little fat.Sometimes if I take it serious I will feel ugly.Every of us especially girls enjoy a lean stature beside me.I have imagined I would be a sexy girl someday, but even now I'm envisioning.I want to lose weight and I do a lot of exercises, but I failed every time because I can't bear the pain. Now,I give up losing weight.Just be myself is OK.

The important thing is how you feel about yourself. Don't let anybody else tell you how or what you should be. If you're content to be a little overweight then so be it... don't let other peoples opinions make you feel bad about yourself.

Well, as per the online calculators available for BMI, I am on the threshold of being normal and overweight…a few kgs here and there could make or break my world! OK OK so I ‘feel’ FAT…the same as you really. You see I was once quite skinny or let’s say good figure but post pregnancy, I just could not put my finger on how I put on those flabs round my waist…that’s all! I am OK everywhere else but these layers I carry on my tummy actually wrecks havoc on the small of my back. Its surprising how many people are actually more worried with the cosmetic implications of being fat than the actual dangers it poses to our back and spine and ankles. I want to shed the Fat BUT not because I feel ugly or my hubby feels I’m not sexy or something equally silly, BUT because I want to feel lithe again, I want to run without panting, I want to climb stairs without feeling my knees giving away and most of all, I love my spine and I know the small of my back just cant carry so much weight.

There are definitely health implications for me also. I have heel spurs and 'plantar fasciitis' (a sprain in the arch of the foot that can take 2 years to heal). Both of these conditions are connected and I am absolutely certain that the extra weight contributes to the pain that I suffer in my heels... especially at the end of the day after I've been working because I do a job that keeps me standing in one spot all day... not good when you have heel spurs.

I used to be fat but that time I feel good about myself and everybody loves me. I didn't know that I was 10kgs overweight when I dated one guy and he said that I am so fat. I have dated other guys before him and they like me. That guy made me conscious of myself and tried to know my weight that time. He was right, I am fat so I work out to loss my excess weight and I am happy with the results. I feel that I am a better person now

Sounds like he's an ex boyfriend... and so he should be. Saying something like that was totally RUDE! and inconsiderate. The only good thing that came out of it was that losing the excess made you feel good. But if he hadn't commented then you wouldn't have even cared

Hi Grandma I nearly always see you responding to my topics It's a bit scary how far above my ideal weight I actually am. And I guess the thing is that I don't actually LOOK fat! Yet officially I am mildly obese. But like I say, the only thing that really worries me is the discomfort of the extra weight... apart from the things mentioned in my original post, it's putting extra pressure on my heel spurs and I work on my feet so by the end of a work day I can barely walk for the pain in my heels

I'm about 10 pounds overweight. Statistically, I am within range of my BMI and everything and not considered overweight, but I would love to lose about 15 pounds. I do have a chunky stomach and could use toning in other areas as well.

Sounds more like you need to tone up rather than lose weight. But of course it's up to you if you want to lose a little weight.

I to am overweight. Enough to feel exactly like you, folds in my way. Tummy hurting my back when I sleep since it tends to pull at my spine since the weight is there. I have tried loosing some but it really doesn't want to come off or stay off. At this point I have just become accustomed to it. I wear tight pants when I feel up to it to help me keep it sucked in so that I can strengthen those muscles. I try to drink more water, eat less and usually that does do the trick I have just had health problems and so I couldn't dwell on the weight when I have other issues I was still dealing with. That being said I commend you for quitting smoking and encourage you to lighten your load so you feel better and so you fit much better into your clothing. Plus begin to feel so much better overall. I bet you do feel better just from not smoking and having kicked your habit. Now just put more of a childs portion on your plate and limit the 2nds, or drop them. Drink the water you can chug down all day. Keep your eyes on the prize of feeling even better and not struggling to do simple tasks. I am about 40 lbs over weight, and I know it's very frustrating to be right in that area. God Blesses! Sandy

I do feel MUCH better just from having quit smoking. I'm an asthmatic and used to take my reliever on a daily basis... now I only take it about once per month. So yeah, I do feel much better within myself And I seem to be getting on top of the snacking thing now too so that's good.

I don't know if you know BMI (body mass index, I think). The normal BMI is between 18 and 24, and mine is about 23.9. So I am not fat, LOL. But I am in Hong Kong now and Hong Kong people are very slim. So I am fat in their eyes. But I don't care. I feel really comfortable and healthy. I think you really need to lose some weight for your health rather than your comfortable or ugly. What you do will affect your family, your relatives, especially your children. You should make an good example for your children. I know it is hard to lose weight. If you can't, just be happy and be yourself, which is the most important. Best wishes for your happy life!

Before gaining the weight my BMI was 26, it's now 34 Basically I need to drop my weight from 95kg (209lb) to 65kg (143lb). So I need to lose 30kg (66lb) to bring my BMI down to 23.3 I have already cut down the munching of sweets/lollies at my computer. If I get a craving for something sweet I go get a piece of fruit instead. I have also increased the amount of excercise I get In the last couple of weeks I have noticed that my jeans are getting slightly looser so the tactic seems to be working.

Is eating can already make us fat? Because I have already tried this idea. I really eat a lot. But to my dismay, I am still thin. And even my friends are already mocking me because of my size. Please help me....
• Australia
29 Mar 09
THere are a LOT of factors that contribute to our size 1. How much we eat 2. What types of food we eat (high fat, high carbohydrate etc) 3. Our eating patterns oddly enough, it's better to eat small amounts frequently. 4. Our excercise levels. 5. Most importantly, our metabolism. At a guess I would say you have an extremely inefficient metabolism, in the sense that your body extracts very little from the food you eat. Most of the calories you consume are passing out of your body without you using them. Sometimes excercise can help you build up your muscle which can compensate for having very little body fat. I wouldn't recommend eating high fat content foods to try to gain weight.

I'm over weight and I feel very uncomfortable, just like you I don't feel being fat is ugly.. but my body feels ugly. I'm in the process of trying to loose weight but its the hardest thing to do... when you are average or under weight you don't get the negative vibes from people as being big... and like you side little things like tieing my shoe becomes a big task. My mother stopped smoking for a while and she replaced it with chewing gum... for her that eliminated the urge to put food in her mouth and that may help you...

Yeah, that reaction from others isn't nice at all. I hate it when someone asks me if I've gained weight... though no-one has called me fat thankfully :) Doing the gum thing though, Wrigleys Extra sugar free. And it does help.

No I am not fat but I did at one point put on quite a bit of weight. I did not feel ugly but like you, I felt uncomfortable. It felt as if it slowed me down physically. I noticed the extra weight when climbing stairs or walking etc. also the whole clothes thing....couldn't dress in the same clothes that I always had and look right or feel right in them. my budget did not allow for a new wardrobe so I got by on thrift shop finds and hand-me-downs from others. "Fat" sounds ugly....how about pleasantly plump? You are very right....larger people can be every bit as attractive and often more so than the wee folks. It's all about dressing right for your body type and also I think personality & self-confidence go a long way. Congrats on quitting smoking! I haven't overcome that one yet and I know how very hard it is.

Okay, we're pleasantly plump then LOL. I love to hug people who are pleasantly plump... I don't feel like I'm gonna break them by squeezing too hard like I do with those skinny minnies!

well. you can do more exercise instead of those idle time. i also ever heard someone gain more weight around 5kgs after he quit smoke. i couldn't imagine that out what could this be? does smoke can losse weight or something. now i get the reason and that's instead of smoke . he just eating.

Yes. Besides smoking, eating and drinking are probably the only other tasks that involve bringing your hand to your mouth. So it's very easy to start snacking after you quit because it mimics the habit... but of course most quitters end up gaining weight as a result.

I am very comfortable with myself even though I am a little over weight, according to my doctor my average weight should be around 130lb. Unfortunately I have not been able to loose the weight from my second child, that was over three years ago. I too don't think I am ugly but this year I decided to diet and excerise in order to feel a little more healthy, besides I have to be able to keep up with my girls and they are very active. I am happy that you are happy with yourself and that you don't let your weight make you feel unatractive. I know a lot of women that think gaining weight is the end of the world. I hope that you achieve that weight loss that you are looking for and know that you are not alone, there are a lot of us out here going through the same thing. Good luck and happy mylotting.

I'm with you on this one!! I think it is so sad when women buy into the attitude that fat is ugly... For some reason men are allowed to be fat. You don't hear about male celebrities binge dieting. Men are not the ones that get bombarded with the negative image of being overweight. Seriously, the whole attitude p*sses me off. I was slightly overweight before quitting smoking... and had absolutely NO intention of trying to lose weight. Why? Because it didn't affect me physically! It didn't restrict my activities or my movement, nothing chafed or anything... so what if I was 10kg (22lb) overweight. Now however, it is effecting me physically so I'd like to at least return to a weight that doesn't cause that discomfort. While I acknowledge that image is important to many people (causing them to want to lose weight) for me, the only reason to lose weight is to address health concerns. And even then it must be because a person CHOOSES TO DO SO... not because society DICTATES IT!

I was thin all my life but now I am really fat.And I know why..Because I stopped smoking and I start eating too much.Every day I am telling myself to STOP it but I can't because as you know I must be hungry so I must eat and when I start(for example only apple )then I can't stop..I am eating everything what I see.I am really sad and I don't know how to stop it but I've read that everyone who stop smoking start eating and become fat.But I really want to stop it,but I don't want to star smoking again.I know you can't help me because it is all in my mind.

I know what you mean. Something I have started doing if I am feeling really hungry and I find myself overeating is having a dose of metamucil. I don't know if metamucil is available where you are but it's one of those dietary fiber additives that you put in water or juice and it thickens in the glass. It sets like jelly in your stomach which makes you feel full and it takes quite a while to digest. I find this helps to stop me from overeating. Of course, being fiber it also keeps your bowel regular which of course is another thing that could help with the weightloss... the faster the food goes through your system the less time your body has to take the nutrients etc.
