There's two types of traffic: social and search engine.
Social traffic comes from stuff like blog directories (blogcatalog, technorati and so on), as well as the networks like Twitter, Digg, Facebook and others. It also comes from visiting other people's blogs and commenting - not just "nice post" or "great blog", as they tend to delete or ignore those comments.
Search engine traffic comes from choosing good keywords (tags, labels, whatever your blogging software calls them) so that people find your posts. In the long term this provides a lot more traffic unless you're writing a personal journal or something.
Personally, I've found most of my traffic comes from other people's blogs where I've posted comments: they visit and sometimes link back to me when they post (especially if something I wrote got them thinking and blogging on a similar subject). After that, there's a little from the social networks and search engines. Some also comes from MyLot (put your blog URL in your profile), especially if a blog entry was inspired by a post here, for example.
Have a look at blogadviser.com - lots of tips on there.

I get visitors from forums, blog directories, article writing, but unsure if it's quality traffic. Also optimize post titles and content with keywords, which I have received search engine traffic...

Make your self visible in as many social network sites as possible. It is best that you join a group of your niche. This way you can invite traffic from a crowd that likes the kind of blog you are maintaining.
Ultimately, be consistent in writing articles so that people will have something to look forward to everytime they visit your nest.
