has it got a hdmi slot new tv's and laptops will have thats how I connect mine to the tv,
Its very difficult to help as cant see exactly what you have on the tv and laptop,
personally I would burn it to dvd and watch from there aslong as your dvd player if you have one is able to play the format that you burn to the dvd. IE Avi etc etc

if it's only movies it is a good idea to burn a dvd. But hey is there something so that I can selectively display certain applications of the laptop onto my TV?

There are plenty of video cards on the market that have both inputs and outputs. You can record from the TV (or DVD or Tape) and also play back through the same devices. You can also have the TV display your computer screen, but the resolution is terrible. American TV has 525 lines from top to bottom with a 2:1 interlace. The computer monitor is multisync with random interlace so that it looks closer to a photograph.

Right. Your PC would show things normally, but the TV, depending on how large a screen it has, would look really crappy, especially on graphics. If you've ever seen a really large screen (not HD) television, if you look really closely, you'll actually see the horizontal scan lines with dark lines in between. For standard broadcast television, a vdery good resolution is about 480 dots per inch horizontally. The worst PC that I've seen in the past 10 years is capable of producing 740 dots per inch. Moost can produce 1280 nowadays. The television set just can't reproduce this.
