Better Graphics

Computer Games. It's come a long way in terms of graphics, from the early days of DOS games which graphics were all pixelated or the keyboard characters such as "@ /" representing objects in a rogue game.
In todays world, we now have the capacity to cater for graphics that are so realistic it looks like an photo.
However, why exactly would people want to have games with the best looking graphics around? I've seen a game (an RPG that I don't remember the name of) that provided "elite graphics" which was essentially a huge 7Gb of graphics that had better graphics for the game. I went to a website and saw a comparison done with the game without the elite graphics and the game without elite graphics. The two comparisons had screenshots posted side by side and after a few moments of scrutiny, I realised that the sprites on the character were exactly the same.
The only difference between the two was that there were higher detailed graphics on the background scenery such as buildings and rocks. Why would anyone want to install 7Gb worth of graphics that aren't significantly noticeable in the game unless you stopped and looked at the scenery for a few hard minutes?
Would you install a 7Gb graphics pack like that for higher quality graphics on background scenery?
