I've just been leaving my laptop on my desk after shutting it down every night and its already got a layer of dust on it. Is this harmful? Should I put it back in the bad every night? What is the best option?

HI pitstop, I use my laptop all the time all the time. I prefer not to take the trouble to put in and take out the device frequently. During day time I usually place it on the table in the sitting room. The table is in front of the window and there are two star fruit trees outside. So the air there is cool and comfortable. After having dinner I would like to watch tv program and to type mylot posts at the same time in my bedroom, so the laptop always sits on the table in front of me in night time. The laptop is always on either the table in the sitting room or bedroom if it's not in use. I will put it in the laptop bag only if I want to take it to my working place or elsewhere. Have a nice day and happy posting.

You are most welcome pitstop. Yeah, besides doing some of my office work on the laptop, I prefer to spend most of my free time sitting in front of it. I like reading news, watching videos and playing computer games after typing some mylot posts here

NO, Freind you dont want to put your laptop in bag every night, but to solve the problem of dust do 1 thing only, every night whenever you complete your work just put very nice cloth on laptop & finish.

I keep my laptop out all the time since my desktop is a 2003 dinosaur. I go back and forth. My laptop seems to collect less dust than my desktop. I do feather dust it at least twice a week. Sometimes i put the cover 2/3 of the way closed. You might do that if concerned about dust.

I guess it would be alright to leave it on your desk after using it every now and then, as long as you do clean it regularly so that no thick layer of dust would settle on it. We have this laptop that we also leave on our desk as many of us use it every now and then. I always tell them to wipe it clean before and after using it so that dust wouldn't be much of a problem. I am even planning on buying keypad protection and screen protection of this laptop of ours just to make it presentable.. (^_^") Just regular cleaning will do.. Putting it back and out again from the bag isn't that complicating but, the cables might get worn out due to getting rolled or set aside too often..

Your quite welcome~! (^_^ ) I noticed my cables having that when I always put it back and out of my bag whenever I went to our library to do 'research' so I guess, it really depends on how you would handle them..

I very rarely use my laptop since I mostly use my desktop. However, even though that is the case, I still leave it out of the bag and dust it once in a great while. I use it mostly to capture videos from TV and have it set near my TV anc VCR since I can't take them to my desktop. The other use for it is for travel which very rarely do.

What videos do you capture? Is the quality OK if you do that? How do you do it?

I only do it on rare occasions and it is usually TV shows that I have recorded on my VCR. I bought a very inexpensive capture device a couple of years ago that connects to the video output of the vcr and the connects to my computer by a USB port. It captures in very large mpg format files but you can use the program that came with it to save them in much smaller wmv format files. The program also has editing and can be used to created DVDs although I haven't done that with it. I know there are capture devices that give much better quality than mine does which just O'K and that can put files in the XviD format.

I don't put my laptop inside it's bag everyday. I just leave my laptop on the table after every use. I make it a habit instead of dusting it before I use it. I don't know what's the different effect to the laptop when it is put inside its bag compared to when it just left outside.

Well, I just leave my laptop on the desk after using it. When I am going for work, that is the time that I put it in the bag. But usually when I am hope I just place it on the desk and close it. I do agree that it does collect some dust while on the desk. Perhaps one way to protect it is just to cover it with cloth or plastic so as not to expose it to dust and other particles that may damage the laptop.

The bag was used when the laptop is ported, but at home, I never use the bag, which is used only for storing various accessaries. Instead, I have cloth to cover the machine to prevent dust. Better not to cover it until it gets cooled. For people, who is to bring it to office, I would suggest you put it back before going to bed, otherwise, the morning time will be a hassle, as you have so much to do before going to work.

It kept my laptop six months back in the bag for one day, after that I didn't keep this in the bag even a single day and I have to search the bag now, if I want to keep the laptop. The reason is mostly the system is online during day and night and there is no necessity to keep in the bag.Mine is highly engaged laptop, myself or some others in my family will using this always.

I don't put may laptop back into the bag as you do after I shut down my computer. I don't think it matters as long as you put down the screen. I always put it on the desk beside my bed. My keyboard is covered with a thin layer of silica gel which prevent dust from falling inside. I need't worry about the dust or any other particles. I highly advise you to buy one piece.

If you will not be using it for a while,I would say put it in the bag. The dust will not hurt it. Do you cover your tv when you are done watching it? As long as it is not a sandy type of dust like we have here in Fl it should be fine to leave it out.

I leave mine on my desk all night and keep it plugged in simply because of all the peripherals I have connected to it.

Nope I leave the laptop on the desk but with a piece of cloth covering it as I just got a new laptop - a pressie from my husband. The previous old laptop was left on the desk all the time and gosh there was dust on it so no way with this new one....a cloth to cover it every time I finish using it not only at night but when not in use !!

I do not put it in its bag but it does go to the bedroom with me for safe keeping. As far as the dust goes, I use a soft dry rag and wipe it down so that the dust does not live there.

I always keep my laptop on the desk but i clean it every day to avoid dust and some times i also use the laptop bag but only when i find the laptop is completely cooled down because heat might spoil the LCD's on the long run.
