During the winter we have to check under the hood or honk the horn before starting the car. This is because the barn cats tend to crawl up under the hood to the block heater of the car (block heater keeps the oil and the battery warm so the car will start)
My friend didnt check or honk before she started her car the other day and my cat went through the belts in her car. The cat is ok - no injuries internally or externally other than being a bit naked in spots. I've been letting her spend alot of time indoors because shes missing some fur.
This has happened before with other cats - we had one i found this summer that went through someone elses motor and she took ages to get better. Now she's alot smarter about cars and hasnt gone through the motor again.
Do you have to check before you start your car? Have you ever had a pet (your own or someone elses) be injured by your car?

I am going to send this to my husband, so he can tell you his story (I will say the cat wasn't harmed, but I'll let him tell you the rest of the story). I've never had a car, so I've never had this problem. Might I suggest that if this happens often, to put a sign on the wall nearby stating that cats may try to hide in the cars mechanical workings, and to check for them before starting up the car?

You've got to be on the alert, especially during cold weather. I had a cat do this about 8 years ago. He got under the hood and fell asleep on the warm engine block. Fortunately, the cat didn't try to escape in the morning when the engine was started by my wife and I was outside at that time and couild hear the cat screaming. I got the hood open and the cat ran like crazy. He never tried that again.

When i was 13 i got two kittens for my birthday - one did the same thing yours did sleeping on the engine block...however he rode in my dad's motor for about 4 hours then my dad's truck started acting funny he opened the hood and there was pete. My dad ended up taking him to work on the rigs with him for two weeks and smuggling him into the hotel room.
Pete actually did this twice - the second time dad had to give him to another farmer because they wouldnt let him take pete on the plane to BC when they moved the rig halfway through the two weeks.

My cousins cat got locked in the garage and the next morning her husband got up for work and started the car and went to work like every other morning. Only this time as he was turning the cornor about 15 miles away from home the cat fell out and he seen it. He stopped and was dumb founded that it was his cat from home their in the road. Well after they took her to the vet their was not much they could do for her because she was hurt pretty bad. It was cold so in order to stay warm she crawled up by the car motor. He didn't know she was there of course but he felt bad all the same. They had to put her down and hopefully sharing this knowledge will save other little helpless critters who just want to stay warm!
