I have never liked electric can openers.

They are too noisy and I while I don't like silence in my house-it's always filled with music-I hate that whiny sound that can openers make.
I use an old fashioned hand can opener and I really like it. It's quiet, does the job and stores easily-doesn't take up space on the counter. I remember getting one as a wedding present and didn't dare open a can while the children were asleep! I was so glad when it finally wore out.
I wonder how many people aren't crazy about having a lot of technology in their kitchens? Sometimes old fashioned is the best.

I think anyway possible to save electricity and help the world is great. So do you want to start a bann on electric can openers everywhere.
We can start a petition and get them knocked off everycounter in america.
hehe.
I also do not like electric can openers . They kind of scare me. I can just see the thing in the middle of the night , sneaking into my room and "opening" my foot off.
Yes I think it is quite a bit better to have the manual . safer

Perhaps a collaborative effort? Shoot, I'd definitely buy that book!
Maybe the attack happens the night before his wedding. Giving motive to the applicances effort. They are acutely aware that most, if not all of them, will never make it to the new home of the soon to be Mr. & Mrs. Onefoot.

What a fertile imagination! Have you ever thought about being a writer for horror movies? Perhaps one about a hapless bachelor whose kitchen appliances take on a life of their own as he spends a harrowing night trying to live through the attack, with his alarm system conspiring to prevent his escape!

I don't really like the electric ones either. The noise doesn't really bother me, but I just hate the hassle of trying to get them to work. I would much rather use the manual ones, especially for larger cans. My wife uses the electric one all the time. I don't open many cans, though, so it isn't something that I have to deal with very often.

I will probably use one when my hands get really bad but it'll be quite a few years, thank goodness. Maybe they'll make a silent one by then. I hate the noise!

I do like the electric can openers. I have arthritis in my hands and so don't have the strength to use those old fashioned can openers. They are easy for me to use and are easy to keep clean if you remove the blade and wash it after every use. i don't have any little ones in my house any more that would be awakened by the noise. my really doesn't make all that much noise anyway.

I have starting to have some pains in my hands, arthritis runs in my family. I dread the day when I have to use an electric opener and I hope they make quieter ones by then.
Do you have trouble handling flatware? I happened to think that when my mom is here I put pipe insulation around my flatware so it's much easier for her to eat and doesn't hurt her hands. It make the forks, etc., fat and soft and easier to grasp.

Thank you, Dragon.
Honestly, I have never thought about whether I like, or dislike electric can openers. Like you, we have a manual can opener -- which we almost never use. As I recall, we had an electric can opener, along with an electric meat carving knife wayyyy back in the day. 'Course neither was worth a hill of beans. The cans used to fall off the magnet that supposedly held it in place, and the carving knife was about as precise as an early model Black & Decker hedge trimmer -- remember those???
I honestly don't remember how noisy that electric can opener was, though if it's the noise that bothers you -- I'll trade my husband's coffee grinder for your can opener -- any day. What'dya say?

Silly me, I submitted the response before I had finished it. Doh!
Anyway, thank you for such a lighthearted trip down small appliance memory lane! With the whirlwind and bombardment that is 'life' today, it was a real pleasure to think about, and respond to your question.

Oh no, no coffee bean grinders for me!! Talk about noise...those are like a jet engine to me!
I remember those electric knives, my mom had one once and she quickly abandoned it for her trusty carving knife. Same with my two grandmothers, they thought they were useless. I never saw the hedge trimmer, Dad always used those long hand trimmers like scissors. He could make a bush beautiful in just minutes with those! I'm NOT good at trimming, though, haven't inherited his wonderful sense of proportion.
It's fun to remember old appliance crazes, isn't it? Remember avacado green and harvest gold appliances? I still like that green. Stainless steel is the current rage but I had a fridge like that and it was very hard to keep clean with the children around! And they look cold and bleak.

I agree with you Dragon!
I prefer an old fashioned can opener as well.
I like some technology or modern gadgets... the problem like most is rationalizing the expense, how much use it will get, and where to store it. I work @ a store that has some nifty gadgets and plates ect but where and how often would one use some of this stuff ya know?!?!? Like we had no idea what this long thingee was the manager said it was an Olive Boat... WTH?!??! Why? Same with a tasting spoon where it's a double ended spoon that has a channel that as it's tilted goes to the other end of the spoon and you sample it there... hence not contaminating the food. Neat idea but where would I put it? Could I easily replace it? & I think the only time I'd really need to use it is if I was sick or whomever was cooking was sick.

Great idea if it's not on your list for atleast a day better put it back! *LOL* Yeah they have some interesting gadgets & I live in a small house and space is a premium. I'm trying to find a home for my Kitchen-Aid I probably have like 4ft in counter space so right now it's on our kitchen table

A tasting spoon?! I can see it in restaurants but in my house?! I've never been germ phobic, I figure if I can't swap germs with my family and friends I might as well crawl in a hole and pull it in over me.
I've been in stores like that and seen stuff I think I just have to have. I have a strict rule never to buy anything that hasn't been written down on a list for at least a day. I usually end up wondering why in the world I wanted such a thing!

Not only are they a waste of electric but they are also unsanitary. I haven't had one for like 30 years.

Electric ones are sanitary if you take the time to wash them after each use but who has the time to do that?! If you're more germ conscious than I am, you can always spray and rinse a manual one without much trouble. I just wash mine once a day and I don't open many cans, anyway.

I don't care for them either. It seems to me that they only open the cans that it wants too LOL. I have one that won't open all cans. So I made my husband go buy me a manual can opener, especially being that hes was the one that act like he couldn't use it he needed an electric can opener. Mine you he's not the one that cooks only cook and open is soup cans or anything that will benefit him when hes hungry. But I do get a nice laugh when he tries to use it and it won't work the way he likes it. But any how, IDO PREFER MY MANUAL OPENER.

It doesn't matter in my house what kind of can opener I have..( I have just replaced a manual one-)in fact,I don't need ANY electrical gadgets in my kitchen to be used before the cat comes looking to see what's on the menu!

Their noses are better than a bell, aren't they? My dogs will be upstairs and if I hope a can they might not hear it but they sure do smell it, and come running!

I use an old fashioned one as well. I however dont have an electric one - i tried one once at my aunts and ended up having to get help opening the can because the darn can opener was smarter than me!
I like my quiet cheap can opener - if i lose it or it breaks it doesnt cost me a fortune to replace. Plus it doesnt wake people up like you pointed out.

Electrics are hard to work with, more trouble than they are worth! And if you don't take them apart and wash them often they get really yucky. I can spray my hand can opener with bleach and dry it off in 15 seconds, very convenient.

I hate my electric can opener. It seems to always become disassembled when I am using it. I spend so much time trying to put it back together. My hand held can opener is no better, I guess it is a cheap one, and I find myself struggling to open a can. Guess, it is time for me to invest in a good can opener.

A good manual can opener is a great investment. The electric ones are so hard to clean, not because they're hard to take apart but because they're so hard to put back together!

i think I won an electric can opener once at a carnival booth. I took it home and it sat on a shelf for years until one day when I was cleaning I pulled it out and actually tried to use it. It was attempt three before I got it to latch on right and then it didn't properly cut it and I had to try and use the manual opener to get the stupid lid loose and off. That was the day I cleared a little shelf space and tossed that contraption. Talk about taking an easy task and making it more complicated with technology. Maybe if I worked in an industrial kitchen where I had to open lots of huge cans everyday, but not for around my little house, thank-you.

Although they are noisy sometimes it is better than a hand one especially if the user is left handed. Have you ever watched a left handed person use a hand tin opener it is scarey. I know you can buy left handed ones though and must get one for my left handed family members.

I never considered that but I know they now make a lot of things for left handed people. I just pictured trying to use my can opener left handed and it's very difficult!

I'm not too fond of the electric can openers myself. I have a hand held one too and I almost always use it instead of the electric one. I compare the noise to fingernails going down a blackboard...just irritating lol. Most of the other appliances I don't mind as much. I find I use a lot more of them now that I have arthritic hands the past few years. Up till then I'd still mix a cake by hand most of the time, make my own bread (without a breadmaker...the old fashioned way) and do other things manually.

My can opener has big handles and a thick turner thingie so it's friendly to my hands. Don't you just hate the aches and pains of getting older? We adapt and then something else comes along...well, whatever doesn't kill us just makes us stronger!

I never had tried or have electric can opener so i can't tell for sure how noisy it is but one thing i am sure it can add up to electricity bill. Personally we have a handy can opener and old fashioned hand can opener but i never like using it either. What i use is knife, i was already get used to it and its much easy for me to use it than our old can opener that is so hard to turn. However when the hand can opener is new its easy so sometimes i used it.

I don't like electric can openers either. I always have a hard time opening a can with one anyway. I will stick to the good old fashioned hand held one. As long as it is a good one. My brother has this cheap one I feel like tossing in the trash every time I attempt opening a can with it.

When I first moved in my house, everything was a mess and I couldn't find my can opener. Luckily, I carry a little army-issue can opener which is a real lifesaver! They are a pain until you learn to use them properly but having one in an emergency kit saves space and they work very well. I finally found my regular one, which was a relief!

I don't like them either, they actually kind of creep me out. I think I'm picturing an old bulky one (that's either 'harvest gold' or 'avocado green' in color). They were just so big and loud, plus they looked like they would suck you up into them if you got a stray finger or sleeve caught in them. Some of the new ones are neat, we saw one a while ago that looked much like a manual one and I think it was a battery powered rechargeable thing. That I can see if you have arthritis or missing fingers! Otherwise I'll just stick with my regular one. I actually think it was a hand me down when I first moved away from home - and it was getting ancient at that point - but it works fine and I can put it in the dishwasher!

The electric ones have nicked my fingers before when I got impatient and put my hand up to get the can. I like my manual one, I like to be in control. I thought about that powered manual one I've seen on TV but my hands aren't that bad yet!

Electric can openers are noisy and half the time the cans fall off the opener, what a mess!
