Non-smokers: can you immediately tell if a person you meet is a smoker?

What kinds of things do you notice about people who are smokers? Is it a faint smoke-y smell, or is it a raspy voice, or is it some yellowing on the fingers from holding cigarettes too much?
What are some of the things you notice as a non-smoker (about smokers) that others might not?
I'm just curious to know. OK, there's a little bit of a back-story. I've been stressed lately with school & work, so I've bought a couple packs of cigarettes and have been smoking them like crazy, and I feel like everyone around me can just SENSE it.
Is it true? Do smokers all share similar qualities or features that set them apart from non-smokers? What do you think?

I can tell if someone is a smoker, but it usually depends on when they last smoked as I can only tell by the way they smell. My parents smoke, so when he visits them and comes home to us I can smell smoke right away on his clothes. If there is any other sign of a smoker, I don't really know as the smell is the only thing that I notice. If a person takes frequent breaks or trips to the outside is also usually a sign of a smoker. At my job, people who smoked took more breaks so that they can get a few puffs in. My sister also only smokes when stress, which is not a good thing because you are falling back on a bad habit when most vulnerable. Is there anything else you can do to relieve stress? If not, why are you so worried your friends should accept you no matter what. When my sister started smoking I was in shock becasue but after awhile I get used to it, she's just not allowed to smoke in the house.

Thanks for responding. I guess I'm in the same boat as your sister right now. I run, occasionally, but it's not always something I have time to do - whereas smoking you can do while commuting or between classes, which is convenient for me. I agree that it's "falling back on a bad habit when most vulnerable", that was an excellent way of putting things, tcycharmy. Thanks.
I think I'm more afraid of my parents disapproving - although it's kind of hypocritcal to do so considering they've smoked all of their lives too. I know I'm 18 and can make my own decisions..But I would just feel really uncomfortable if my parents were to find out, you know?
Thanks again..Didn't mean to rant! lol!

My sister was also afraid of our parents disapproving because even though they have been smokers there whole lives, they never wanted us to start. So what my sister did was to find one parent more understanding than the other and either talk to them about it or lite up in front of them. I couldn't remember. I'm not sure what your parents are like, but you can do as my sister did.

That's a good idea, I definitely can see myself doing that. The issue right now is that I'm not a long-term smoker, I just chain smoke on occasion (specifically during the busy season at work or during midterms/final exam week at school), so I don't feel like I'm at that stage quite yet. But we'll see. Thanks again for your response!

Hmmm.. honestly, I'm not really good in telling if a person smokes or not. Unless if I could really smell them or sometimes I could see their lips are a bit grayish, so I could assume that they smoke. But I cannot really tell if I don't ask them.

I don't know if that's just me, but lips are one of the things that I usually notice in a person I'm talking to, and actually even when looking at pictures, and yeah when they're a bit grayish or actually if it's even darker, then if I'll ask them if they do smoke, 90% chances is that they do.

Most smokers have a bad breath, blackish lips, stained teeth, and the smell of the smoke stays on your clothes too

Blackish lips occur to heavy smokers after a while of smoking.

Yeah, I know a smoker when I see one. You'd be surprised that most smokers stand in a similar manner - because they kind of acquire a stationary stance while smoking and I guess it's the most comfortable standing position they have. Also, I can smell it even though the smoker only passed by and he's already eating mint candy to cover the smell - it sticks to the skin, the clothes and the breath no matter how much Smint you take.
BTW, once you damage your breath, you'd always have a bad breath because of smoking. My father hasn't smoked in the past 10 years and he still has THAT breath. I hope you stop soon before you reach that stage.
Thanks for the response on my discussion!

Thanks for YOUR response! I never considered how people stand as a give-away for them being smokers. But I never actually stand outside and smoke, it's usually when I am driving, so I'm sitting. But thanks for your response! I'll definitely take that into consideration.

It depends..I can tell when a co-worker has been on a smoke break as there's always that slight smoky residue around them when they get back,or if you get close enough, from their breath...the indoor workplace smoking ban has most people out in the fresh air now for their fix,so that helps disperse the odour too,so you don't immediately notice it on clothing as much..I haven't noticed many people recently with nicotine stained fingers, but it's usually older people..and it's usually older Women who have that deeper, husky sounding voice too..

I must say that I don't think that smokers have a faint smoke-y smell. They smell horribly of it! I am not one that notices the other factors unless they are very very obvious. The smell usually hits me long before anything else!

Hi cutie maezee! I think that's true. Everytime i ask a smoker if they smoke, the answer is always yes eventhough i have no clue if the do. Well, that's aside from the obvious signs like the things you mentioned. I can tell it right away from the smokey smell though. I don't smoke because i have allergic rhinitis. Friends can smoke freely though.

It's easy to guess whether a person is a smoker or non smoker but sometimes it is difficult to. Smokers can be identified first of all with the smell which comes from them while talking and secondly mostly smokers face becomes different and so can be make out. People who are chain smokers carry the smell even though they are not smoking.

As an ex-smoker, yes I can tell when someone is a smoker. My sense of smell is very very very strong now. And smokers do have certain traits to them, especially if they have been smoking for a long time.

I do not smoke and for the most part I can tell if a person is a smoker. Besides the obvious signs (smells like smoke, orangish fingers etc) Certain smokers who have been smoking for years have a look. They look older than they are. They look careworn and rougher. I am not saying all people who smoke look that way. Nor am I saying that all people who look rough smoke. But about 90 percent of the time I am right when I say a person smokes. Some people who have just started smoking or dont smoke much, dont have that look. Like you, I probably wouldnt be able to tell you smoked yet. But give it a few years. :)

I think with most smokers it is obvious because I can smell the residue from their last smoke. With younger people, it is harder to tell if they are a smoker or not. They have not been exposed to smoking as long and do not have the same signs as a long time smoker would. For example, their teeth and fingers are not yet yellowed because of the habit.
I think that some people also try to hide the fact that they smoke. With these people, it can be very difficult to tell that they do it. I have been very surprised after finding out that some people I know smoke. Overall, I think it comes down to the person.

Theres a kid in our French class named James. It's obvious he smokes at least a pack a day, you can tell from his horrible stink. I can smell the smoke from the other side of the class and know where it's coming from. Even the teachers have noticed it, but they can't really do anything about it.

no i can't.
they are some style'smokers, who just smoke because they think smoking is cool.
they don't smoke much, around one package in 4-5 days.and i can't immediately tell if he's smokin or not.
But if he's a smoker who smokes more , i can smell it:( and my nose fills :(
