Something in my dog's ear!

I woke up this morning to find my dog shaking his head constantly and favoring his right ear. Apart from this he is acting normal, but I cannot find anything in his ear. I looked down it with flashlight and cleaned the surface with a q-tip and nothing. I can't afford to have a vet check it out, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get rid of the obstruction because it must be done far as, again, I can't see it.

You have been given good advice here already & exactly the things I was going to say! In addition to putting a small amount of baby oil in your dog's ear, if it is a large dog, I find it better to wipe the ear out with a cotton ball. I do this with my german shepherd & it works great. I have an ear wash solution that I bought from our vet.
And smelling the ear is another good thing to do. If there is a foul odor coming from the dog's ear, there is an infection & it will need to go to the vet for medicine.
Please keep us informed on how your dog is doing!
