Do you think it very hard to quit smoking?

I never smoke, so I have no experience about the hardness of quit smoking. My father is heavy smoker. My mother and I always persuade my father to abandon smoking. Persuation last a long time. To our dissapointment, my father failed. I have heared many cases about people who tried to quit smoking many times but failed finally. Do you think it very hard to quit smoking?
