what can you say about the phrase "the more you hate, the more you love"?

I don't know about that. I remember my friend has told me this before, she said the more she loves the guy, she ended up hating the guy very much. But I think it doesn't make any sense to me. Isn't the more you love, the more love you have on the people or thing???
