Would you put her down?

I have a nine year old Rotty and Husky mix, she's a big fat licky thing and I love her so much. The problem is that she's had arthritis for the past four years and it's just getting worse and worse. Some days she can barely get up at all, I have to carry her outside so she can go to the bathroom. My evil father-in-law says I should put her down but I can't. Most of the time she's ok, she just has bad days. But I don't want her to suffer either. What would you do?

You must make this decision on the question who am I keeping this dog alive for? The Dog or myself. When her quality of life becomes mostly pain and you know she is going to get worse each day, it's time. Remember she cannot see into the future, you can. You said she was fat, well this contributes to her arthritis, So the first thing I would do is put her on a diet, you might be surprise at how she improves.

I would not put your dog down but help her to feel better. If we get arthritis do we just put ourselves down or have someone put down who we know who gets arthritis? No. Take your favorite search engine and search "relieve dog of arthritis" ( leave out the "quotes") and research what you can do for your dog. I would stick to natural remedies if I were you. If you know of a vet that does homeopathic medicine, try that. There is truly no need to put your dog down. I have arthritis. No body is considering putting me down. Your dog needs some Omega Three Fatty Acids in her diet. Have you tried Glucosamine, MSM and other supplements for her? Please read this: Dog Arthritis Pain Relief http://www.dogbiz.com/faq-arthritis.html Dog Arthritis http://www.placervillevet.com/arthritis.htm PS: I am not a promoter of IAMS or PURINA dog food. Information on Arthritis in Dogs http://arthritis.about.com/od/dogarthritis/Dog_Arthritis_Canine_Arthritis_Information_on_Arthritis_in_Dogs.htm Recovery http://www.recoverysa.com/arthritis_dogs.htm Continue to research as there are ways that you can help your dog be more comfortable. Keep her active as well.

this is now more about quality of life rather than quantity.. I would go to your vet and talk to him about her condition and ask him for some insight. Sometimes when I dog is in pain and loves a family they will only show the pain when it's in it's absolute worse. I hate to say this but you really have to think more about her and her quality of life rather than keeping her becuase you love her. Go to the vet he can help you decide what level the pain is on and help you decide how much quality there is to her life. I'm sorry that you are going through this and hope that you have the strength for what ever the decision is.

It's always hard when a decision has to be made whether or not to put a dog down. My dogs are like my children as well as my best friends. If the dog seems to be in constant pain, I would say yes. If it seems like her personality has changed, or she no longer wants to eat, you may want to consider putting her to sleep. However, if she doesn't seem to be in any pain, even though she might not be able to walk or function quite as she should be able to or used to be able to, I would certainly not put that dog down. You seem to be able to give her extra care and attention. I would personally try to wait until I knew she was in pain. Like you, I would be scared she was in pain also, but usually dogs will whine a lot more or act differently, lose appetite, etc if they are feeling really bad. Take comfort in knowing she had a wonderful home and a good life. Best wishes, whatever decision you choose.

Aww, i know it must be a very hard decision to make, and i know how much you must love her, but i think the best thing to do is to put her down, i know its easier said than done, but atleast then she won't be in pain anymore xx All the best xx

Hi lotter i can under standyour problem as we also lost our dog a month ago and before dying she was on the bed for five days, she couldnt even get up,she was doing all the.. and urination on the bed itself, but unlike your case my mom in law and dad in law both were more attached to herthanme so i didnt faced the problem as you arefacing, but still i can say that he is also not wrong at his place,so you just arrange a different bed for your dog,may be a smalll cot or something like that all the best and happy my lotting
