Does Your Child Hide Food?

My son has a bad habit of sneaking and hiding his food because he doesn't like to eat much, all he wants is junk food half the time, and I have to look over his shoulders while he is eating all the time. He is three years old, I guess when I take my eyes off of him for just a little while he sneaks and hides his food in some of the weirdest places... I have just put two and two together he says "Mommy I am Finished Eating" I check and his plate is almost empty, so I let him get up from the table, so as I start to clean up I find food hidden in books, food hidden under my dining room table, food hidden in CLEAN UNUSED BABY DIAPERS, food hidden inside the cardboard tube of the paper towel roll, Oh my gosh are you kidding me? My kid has out smarted meeeeeeeee!!....LOL.... (I guess as parents, sometimes we have to laugh to keep from crying...LOL) Does your child hide their food in odd places?

Hi zouna5, Thanks for your response, oh my goodness...LOL... well, the problem with my son is this he is hiding his food because he thinks he is going to get dessert more quickly than he would if he had to take the time to eat all of his dinner first. He has an older sister who is six years old and she eats all her food with no trouble then i give her juice to drink and her dessert, I guess my son thinks he can get around the eating part and jump straight to dessert by hiding his dinner LOL he out smarted me this time but I will be on point from now on so there will not be a next time.

I am not aware of my own child hiding food because she doesn't eat much and generally leaves food on her plate and just refuses to eat anymore. I had to smile when I came across your discussion because I used to do that as a kid. I'm not a meat eater; I'm not vegetarian but I don't particularly like red meat and I think it's because I was force fed with it as a child. My mother would cut a steak up in small pieces and take literally hours to follow me around the house with it to make sure I ate it. So to cut down on the process I hated I would take the piece of steak into my mouth and spit it out in tissues, in between magazine pages, pot plants, whatever when she wasn't looking...Yuk! I fooled my mum for quite a long time; she would walk away happy that I had eaten the meat and I would run around and clean up the offending pieces I spat out earlier, I say it again...Yuk!

Hi paula, Oh my gosh...LOL...I can't stop smiling when you said that you would put your food in tissues... I thought I had named all the places my son had hidden food but I just remembered that he hides his food in crumpled up tissues also... LOL... well I guess it is just a phase that hopefully my baby will get over soon. Thanks for your response paula:)

Well, he's still a kid, so those odd behaviors can still be corrected. But you really must correct it otherwise it will spill to other areas...as he grows up, he might end up thinking that it's ok to keep things because he was not told the reality of it. You can gently explain to him why doing it is not acceptable, in a language that a kid the age of your son can understand. Don't just ignore it just because he's still a kid. You must explain and reason with him. Your being outsmarted by him is not really the issue here. The bottomline is, you should correct him this early. Well, they say that to be a parent is never easy, and the younger you train your kid, the better it is for you and him. Cheers!
