What are your homework rules?

How do you handle it when your kids get home from school with homework. My rule is that they can have a quick snack and then get down to it, but I have seen other parents who get them to do it after dinner or allow their kids to go out and play and do it last thing at night. My thinking is that if they do it right away, they don't forget and then have the rest of the day for fun, what about you guys?

I'm still working on that one. My youngest is in the 7th grade, you'd think I'd have figured it out by now. I'm experimenting with a new strategy. I don't say much (if anything) to him about homework til about 8:00pm, then I tell him the time and tell him he needs to get to work. Whatever he doesn't finish, we do in the morning. It somewhat works for us, only because his sister starts school an hour before he does. Both of their schools are a bit far from our home, so usually we don't come home between dropping her off and him starting school. We have breakfast at McDonalds or some nearbye (inexpensive) breakfast place. He'll finish up his homework then.
It's a pretty unconventional way of doing things, but I got tired of getting after him all afternoon til he gets it done. He has other issues as well, and this just seems to be what works best for him now. I've been doing it this way for about 2 weeks now. I think it seems to be the best solution (for us)so far.

Whatever works. You really have to do what you think is best for your child and that differs for each individual family. Hope it keeps working for you guys and thanks for the response.

Homeschooling is a little different and I rarely have to tell them / ask them if they have done their assignments. They are geeky little eggheads that love it. When they did go to mainstream schools they would usually have everything done before they got home so that was rarely an issue. I think it would make sense to let them unwind for a little bit, have a snack then hit the books so there would be no excuses later. That way if they did forget something or needed help they could call someone in their class without worrying that they are waking someone up or disrupting their family time.

The rules in my house are that they do their homework as soon as they get home from school while I prepare dinner. Then after they eat the rest of the evening is theirs to do as they like (within reason of course). That way they dont use the excuse that they have a headache or tired from running around. :-)

We home school our kids so they don't have any homework but I do quiz them through out the day about what they learned that day.
