I dont think there is a way to convince them if they have been hurt in the past. i mean from expierence, there will always be that feeling deep down inside that comes out and you cant really express it without being yelled at but just keep it inside.
I am a firm believer in letting the person know how you feel even if they dont want to hear it. Maybe in a song you wrote, or a song on the radio that explains more then you could, a letter, a poem, or just over the phone or in a text message.
I know that things are easier to get out when i write my husband about how I feel or text him instead of face to face because he is stubborn and doesnt listen to well, but he seems to understand more of what I say when he reads it.
Just my opinion:)

Hello xtremegrafix! My husband was divorced and was cheated by his ex - wife. I know even if he didn't tell me, he's afraid I might leave him too. I always told him how much I love him and that would never leave him. When we go out together, I only look at him as if no one's around us.
