Re-potting a cactus

I love the cactus & have just bought 2 at my local weekend markets. My question is...how do you go about re-potting them into a bigger pot & how do you know they are ready for a bigger pot? Mine are in small pots at the moment (both fit on the same bread & butter plate together). I know not to water them more than 1 - 2 times a week but that's all. Also, how do you go about growing your own from scratch?

Well I cant say for your cacti but mine from a local nursery were in a very small plastic pot and I repotted them right away because the roots were coming out of the little drainage holes. I made them into a terranium in a glass bowl placing madium sized rocks found at Home Depot and then put a cactus mix over top of it. After you plant the cactus in the arrangement you wish to have you put a fine sand over top the mix. I found my decorative sand at Walmart in the craft section but Home Depot had a 'desert sand' but I went with a white fine sand to add more touch to my terranium. I also put the real small stones (the size of a dried up pea) on top of the sand I found at Micheal Arts and Crafts store to give it more color through the glass bowl. I too am new to the cactus so Im sorry I cannot offer much for the growing from scratch but you can always find advice from 'The Helpful Gardener' and place I like to get information. You can check my discussion for terranium ideas and pics.

I've had my cactus for almost 2 years now and I'm getting ready to move it to a bigger pot. I want to put mine in a bigger pot because the roots are coming out of the bottom now and the plant is visibly bigger than the pot is. From what I heard, you should break the pot that it is in now if possible to keep the roots from tearing and place it down in another pot. Wear gardening gloves of course to keep yourself from getting stabbed. I haven't heard how to propagate them yet, I think it will depend on the variety of cactus.

That does sound fairly easy - how did your re-potting go? has your cactus survived?
