Should the Philippine Government Bow Down to the Demands of the Abu SayafRebels?

It's all over the news in the Philippines about the three International Red Cross hostages and the threat of the Abu Sayaf rebels to cut off the head of one of them unless the military withdraws from Sulu. The government has not however succumbed to this threat and in fact it has strengthened the military forces in said island. Senator Gordon seems inclined to give in to the rebels out of his desire to save the three hostages. Do you think the government should submit to the demands of the rebels or should it be firm and call their bluff? Is it right for the government to risk the lives of the three hostages by not acceding to the rebels demands?

This is the sad part in our country. What do these rebels fighting for? We all know that the segregation of religion between Christian and Muslim Filipino's is already ended and both group is already in peace. Why don't we have peace instead of war. Many innocent people already involved in this war and yet our government hasn't figure out what will they do in order to eliminate this acts of terrorism and maintain peace in both parties. For me, I think our government would do negotiations between these rebel group and once and for all they must ensure that these groups will not hurt or kill any of the hostages. They will not give-up or retreat to the bluffing statement of the rebel. I think they must force the rebels to surrender or else all of them will surely wipe out. But that is only case to case basis if ever the rebels will not cooperate on the decisions of the government. And there's noting more good news if ever we will hearing that both parties are at peace...

I really don't think negotiation is a good idea. They are not even called rebel group since they do not have a cause that they are fighting for. Their cause is just a facade among other things and their real motivation for kidnappings is monetary and all the ransom they got from their previous hostages were not even given to their community but just bought more arms for their group. I really think that they should really eradicate this bandits after the safe release of the kidnappers.

Well Tenchi, indeed what are the rebels fighting for? Is it for freedom or for a just cause or do they indeed deserve to be called or dignified by being called rebels. RSA seems to have a point. These so called rebels are not worthy of the name rebels because what they are doing are plain criminal acts with the intention of enriching themselves at the expense of the peace-loving citizens. While indeed negotiation is always advisable, in the case of these Abu Sayaf, the government has time and rime again negotiated with them and forgiven them and allowed them to dictate terms and so they think they can get away with anything. The time for negotiation is past and i agree with RSA that the government should now go all out to eradicate them once and for all.

I agree that the government should not bow down to their demands and instead it should do all means to save the hostages, the remaining ones, I mean but the government should not descend to their level by doing exactly what the rebels are doing. in short, do all means to catch the rebels and stop their illegal acts but not necessarily kill them without giving them a chance.

I think both sides have their own justified reasons to stand by on. For the government side I guess they have to stand firm against this bandits/criminals demand. They have complied with their request for several times and these groups did not comply with their promise to release their hostages. Of course Senator Gordon being the head of the Red Cross in the Philippines would want to have the safe release of the hostages without resorting to violence. I also understand his reason why he would want to surrender to the demands of the bandit group. I too am divided as to what measures to do since the Abu Sayaf has become unreasonable and does not hear to any pleas even from their own religious clerics.

It is indeed a difficult situation since hostages are involved but the government must have to decide taking into consideration the greater good for the greater number.Regarding Sen. Gordon, well he is concerned for the hostages but I wonder if he were president would he be that easily swayed by the rebels demands just because of hostages? he would ;qwe27not be a good president then.

IO have my highest respect for Senator Gordon even when he was still Mayor of Olongapo and Subic Bay Chairman I was impressed at how he managed his homecity and the Subic Bay. Now that he is the Red Cross Chairman I am impressed at how he has managed to stay on top of everything.

Yes I agree that the government should not withdraw the military from Sulu. There is no assurance that the hostages will be released and besides the Abu Sayyaf will just become more confident that they can fool the government and make it subordinate to them. I hate the Abu Sayaf groups because they do not know how to fight equal. They are coward because they do not face the military and they do not face us people. I hate them because they take innocent hostages and they threaten them. They do not take care of the hostages because they look very thin and most of them are with health problems. The Abu Sayaf are one of the most evil people in the Philippines and they should all be killed because of the tremendous threat and too much bad things they have been doing. Government must do everything so that the three red cross volunteers will be saved.

Yes it has been proven in the past that the Abu Sayaf do not keep their word and therefore the government should not really believe all those promises and in turn commit itself to do something in return for the freedom of the hostages. And it is true the government must do EVERYTHING REASONABLE TO SAVE the hostages but not to the extent of allowing itself to be held hostage by rebel demands.

For my own opinion, they should not bow to those ABU SAYYAF rebels. the government should take actions now! They have been puppet for so many years with those rebels and yet they are still not doing anything!! For heavens sake, Philippine government must think of the people sake for once and for all. This is not the first time that Abu Sayyaf have done like this and the worst is that they beheaded some of the prisoners before and yet the Philippine government have not done anything! It's all like pieta on stage that they will tell the people that they catch one of the rebel, they killed one of them and etc., but the truth is all a LIE!! This government that we we have right now, doesn't have a heart at all to all of us. Faces of the rebel are on television and even the reporters can interview them and get a picture of them but why can't they catch them all and let them pay for their sins? Isn't it so obvious? Filipino soldiers are giving their life just to save those innocent people and do what they promise when they became a soldier but why can't the government do as well? ..

Oh so right! For years the rebels have been spoiled by the government that's why they are so brazen in their demands. And indeed it is surprising why journalists can interview the rebels but the government cannot find them. I also agree that the government has sacrificed so many of our soldiers because it is coddling these rebels. Erap did something better by attacking their hideout and so the rebels ran to other countries. The government should now put its foot down and put an end to all of this rebellion in the south.

The government must save the lives of the hostages of ASG because its their lack of security measures that this hostages where captured by the resistant group. Although the government must show their integrity on fighting with the rebels but to think of it, what would the international community, and all the people around the world will think if this hostage taking issues were not stopped by the government. It might be turned out that the Philippines is not safe to went off because of these happenings.

I agree that the government must do everything it can to save the hostages must not at the expense of being held hostage itself by the rebels. if it always gives in to all the demands of rebels, there will never be a stop to what the rebels are doing because they know the government will always comply. And then the Philippin4es, just like Somalia, will be considered an unsafe place to stay. The government must take a firm stand to get the message across to the rebels that the government will not allow itself to be intimidated by them.

why not? even for the sake of the security of the hostages. bow down for pretentions or shall i say government should do trick or make drama for the abusayaff or any possible way so that the abusayaff will gonna surrender..make them believed that they will really recieved such amount in return as long as they will show their face in the public..good planning is important here..the soldiers should hide themselves so that the rebels wont see them..we will let them believed that soldiers is already gone but the truth soldiers is just there hiding in one place.

Well..... that could work if the rebels do not have so many friends and relatives around who will tell them that the soldiers have not really left. You know... blood is thicker than water and definitely they have spies everywhere who will inform them of the troop movements.

Hi acevivx, good day to you. Well, as my own opinion they must not agree with the demand of the Abu Sayaf Rebels , if they really want to move, push away or erase that rebels. The government must know the truth that sometimes we need to sacrifice one life just to kill those bad guys like the Abu Sayaf, it is just like how our country to be free to other country, our heroes sacrifice there life in order for the freedom to be happen. Let's all think advance, imagine if we will give the demand of rebels, they will be easy for us to kidnaped again another hostage and ask again for a trade because they know that the government will only just give that demand easily, in short that thing will happen and happen again, if we will not face the truth about sacrifice. If the hostage will sacrifice their life they will be called a HERO . I know my idea is very sad, and being selfish because of the reason i am not in their situation, but honestly i'm scared if i were in there situation, but that's the only way to stop the rebels here in our country. I hope the government especially to the President must think straight to the path of the good way of sacrificing. That's why this coming election of 2010, we must vote the right person to the right position in order to manage our country good and to think for our country to be intelligent. We must think a million times to vote for the right one. Me, i already know the person that i will vote for the next coming election of 2010, if ever he will run for the position of the President, the man that i will vote is senator chiz escudero because i'm a big fan of him and i believe he had a great expirience in government together with the ability to manage country together with his clean job in government. But if ever he will not run, i think i will just go vote for mr.manny villar because this man also have the ability in managing the country and he have a big chance for a good position for the reason his also popular to other people especially to the OFW that are abuse in their job. Well that's all, if a great leader have a great thinking it will be the way for us to be good in this country and to move away the rebels like Abu Sayaf. That's all, happy posting for us and happy earning. That's the end of my response to your discussion entitled "should the Philippines government Bow down to the demands of the Abu Sayaf Rebels". God bless us always and good luck to our earning career here in this site mylot. =)

Hi Jon.Yes, the government must not be held hostage to the demands of rebels and other unlawful elements otherwise it will be perceived as weak and indecisive and this will encourage more lawless people to challenge its authority. Yes, sometimes lives have to be sacrificed but if this is the only way so as to ensure the protection of the greater number then so be it. Those who sacrifice their lives or who are sacrificed are indeed heroes or martyrs and their sacrifice will always be remembered and honored. We should always try to vote for the best person for the job not because of popularity but because he or she has political weal to do what has to be done even if it is an unpopular decision. More power to you.
