Canker sores are small, painful sores in the mouth. Doctor's don't know what causes them (and they aren't contagious), but say they are most common in women and teens. I tend to get them when I'm dehydrated and stressed...and it seems that drinking soda makes it worse - Do you know if that is true? Do you know of anything that will help prevent these or make them go away? Any tips or secrets?

I have had experience of these sores for many years. I found that they weren't so bad when I took all sugar out of my diet. That included all junk food and foods that said on the label that there was sugar in. Sugar seems to "feed" them and make them much worse. It took about 3 months before I started seeing any real improvement though.
I get them now and only very occasionally. When I do get them, I get a clove of garlic and chew it. It stings in the mouth a lot, but it quickly clears them up. I do not swallow the garlic, although there's nothing wrong with doing so, but when it gets into the blood stream, the body will small quite strongly of garlic.
Yes, stress can trigger them. I practice daily meditation. There is a link to instructions to do that on my profile page here at myLot. - Derek

When I was young I had them almost chroically. They hurt so bad to eat that I missed many meals just because the pain was so bad that I literally could not eat. I am going through this with my 6 year old daughter right now. She has one that hurts so bad she can barely eat. I made her a peanut butter and fluff sandwich and she cried the whole way through eating it.
