I was watching the news today, and they were talking about possibly adding special safty drills to the schools, you know its kind of like a fire drill but its for the event of a school shooting its to prepare and teach kids what they should do if something like that happens. I think that its actually a good idea, because theres so many terrible things going on in our schools these days, and if having a shooting safty drill can keep kids safe and help them survive if something like that happens then by all means. What do you think is it a good idea to add a shooting safty and survival drill to the schools?

I think it wouldn't matter that much especially if there were kids. If they knew what to do on a fire drill then they'd most likely know what to do on a shooting (duck and hide). Also, the commotion on a shooting would throw everyone into panic - also, I think that the only reason there's fire drills in schools is because it's more likely to happen than any other such catastrophe. Shootings are rare events, which is why they become sensational news. Thanks for the response on my discussion!

They might just as well, we sure do have a lot of crazy people bent on hurting innocent people and themselves these days. It's a darn shame that our poor children have to live in such a scary world.

In this day and time..it probably wouldn't be a bad idea. Violence is so sudden that kids need to know what to do and how they can be safe. I think it would give them a little relief to know that is it happens in their school..they'll know what to do.

yes i totally agree with you. shooting at schools has rightfully gained its importance in schools today. Every few day we hear of various phsycopaths,ex-students turning up at their schools only to take innocent civilian lives. shootings in schools has assumed catalasmic proportions today and hence created the need for shooting safety and survival drills.

Yes, I do. Several years ago a boy walked into my daughter's school with a shotgun. Someone spotted him and ran into the classroom she was in to alert the teacher who called the office. Meanwhile several students, including my daughter left by way of the windows and she and her friend just ran. They ran all the way to the girl's house a couple of blocks away where she called me. I called the school and learned that it was safe for them to return but they wanted to punish them for leaving school grounds. I argued that, since there was no procedures in place for something like that, they had no ground to punish anyone who left the building or grounds. Other parents complained, too, and no one was punished but the school did come up with a plan after that. When I was a kid we had Air Raid drills incase the Russians bombed us. I doubt that hiding under our desks would have helped much but we did those drills alllll the time.

Hey there! Yeah, it would be a good idea. The police should be the ones conducting the shooting safety drill. Students will have a knowledge if something like that would happen in their school. But, really the school should provide good security to prevent such things to happen. Have a nice day. Happy posting!!

I think it is a great idea to have a safety drill to make sure kids know what to do in the event of a school shooting. But I think it's even more important to talk about these issues. If there was just a random "shooting safety drill", it might freak some kids out. They might be wondering why all of the sudden these drills are popping up. Are they in danger? Is something going to occur? Are there things going on secretly that the students aren't being told? I think there should be a few days dedicated to the idea. One should be a "preparation" day (note, this would not take the WHOLE day - just an advisory/homeroom period or something). It should let them know what's going to happen with the drill and why it's important. Then should follow a little discussion - something along the lines of "don't worry, school shootings aren't frequent in this area, but we just need to play it safe" or "what to do in the event of a school shooting". Florida has a ton of "hurricane" days, many of which aren't even in the area. We prepare so much for these hurricanes that I think we should also focus energy on other realistic events. Schools should be downright serious about these drills, too - making sure every student reports his name to a teacher and stays quiet. You never know; in a true event, this could be very necessary. My old high school used to use "color codes" - I don't remember what they meant, but it covered ALL the bases. For example, the PA system would alarm "CODE YELLOW" (meaning something like, missing child). No matter what color, the same procedure would be followed - lights are off, students are counted, and once the room is quiet and students are hiding safely, a yellow slip of paper is placed under the door. Obviously this is different for fire alarms. I think you have a very good point.

Yah. I think so too. With this students will know how to react when there is this kind of event.
